Technical question: 6 speed transmission issue

    Just a quick question: I have an '05 Tacoma, 6 speed manual transmission, w/112,000 miles. For the last several months, I've noticed that it "catches a few teeth" going into 3rd gear a couple of times, but only when the vehicle is cold. I've had the 100,000 mile tranny service done, but the issue persists. Is my vehicle just getting old, or is this the first signs of a dieing clutch?

    In most cases a clutch that is starting to wear out is most noticeable when selecting first and reverse . Sounds to me like the snychronizer for 3rd gear is having a difficult time cutting through the cold transmission fluid . If you hold the clutch down for a longer period of time , does the issue still exist ?

    If everything else seems to be working fine, then the 3rd gear synchro may be starting to wear. If its only doing it when it's cold out, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you've changed the fluid then there isn't a whole lot to do about it. Other than have the synchro replaced.


    Double check your clutch reservoir has enough fluid in it.

    To piggy back - Has anyone swapped out syncros?? I've got a few shifts that are notchy, so my guess is they need some attention....

    They are not actually too difficult. Some can be complex though. As for book time, I am at the house so I don't have access to my labor time guide here. Shoot me a PM tomorrow and I will look it up.

    You might try Redline MT-90 gear oil. Many people, including me, have had notchy, poor shifting issues alleviated with use of Redline.

    Looks like book time is in the neighborhood of 10 hours to R&R and overhaul a manual Brunes. That would include a syncro.
