Not to get off topic, but I wish I had the balls to go out and start my own company. Working for a large company certainly has it's perks though and not having to worry that every decision you make directly affects your livelihood just wouldn't work well for me

IMO the cutouts are simply made for supporting sheets of plywood drywall etc. That is why they made them only 1 inch deep, so all the weight is on the cross beams and not rubbing on the box ledge.

If I were making a sleeping platform or ... I think two 2X6's and a 3/4 inch sheet of plywood would be quite enough.

 

would 5/4 deck board work? It has the right height I think, and rounded edges?

 

Thought about using ipe? Very dense wood, structural values close to that of steel. I'm using it as the surface of my deck - amazing stuff. Beautiful too.

 

I made a deck out of Brazilian Ipe, super hard and heavy wood, i used 2 diablo saw blades to finish the project. Beautiful wood.

The ledge and the wheel wells are all level , more surface area , less localized rubbing

 

Any strong grained wood will work in a 1" thickness IMO

 

What is ipe

 

It's a very hard, very resilient type of wood. It's typically seen on boardwalks but I have also seen it used as a rainscreen (wouldn't recommend that application, it was a PITA).

Mine is 1" pine and it works fine. It's a little bouncy, but not much. Also, I am only using 5/8" plywood on top.

 

I used 2x6's notched to sit flush. Then 5/8" plywood in two pieces split lengthwise of the truck, so I could use single platform if needed. On one side of the platform I added a 3-4' (not sure exact length) 1"x6" centered to have 3" of board on either side of the platform edge. Measured this board to fit perfectly between the 2x6"s. This sured of the platform and keeps the 2x6's from sliding. Then of course add the shag carpet
