I talked to my local Toyota service center (they are one of the better ones) about having my transmission fluid serviced. My truck is just about at 60K and have done some towing and off-roading. The service manager said they don't do the drain/refill, but replace all of the fluid. He said they remove the old fluid, put a cleaner in and then drain it, and then refill with new ATF. Does this sound about right? I do almost all of the work on my truck but the transmission kinda scares me. Before anyone says anything, yes I did read Mountainman's thread on flushes...

Also, I asked what the total price would be if had them retorque the propeller bolt and clean/adjust the rear drums - he said around $325 for all of it - before my military discount. Does this all sound reasonable?

    Thanks in advance!

Anyone? Is this a reasonable price for the service? And why would they put a cleaner in the transmission instead of removing all of it and just putting new stuff in?

Any potential dangers with doing this? I look at it as more of a preventative maintenance thing because I want my truck to last for a long, long time...

A true tranny flush is what you want. It sounds like they have the machine to do it right. I have always had a manual with Toyota trucks I have owned so I do not know what Toyota dealers do...

This is the first dealer that I have talked with that even does this - when we were stationed in MD, the dealer acted as this should never be done because it is a "sealed" tranny . I have heard a lot of great things about this dealer/service center so I figured I would let them do the tranny for me...even though I do everything else, tranny work scares me especially given how finicky Toyota's are on fluid levels and all...

So, does the price of $325ish (including re-torqueing the propeller bolt and cleaning/adjusting the rear drums) sound about right or a rip-off? I just really don't have the time to do it myself. My truck is approaching 60K and I don't like to skim on maintenance stuff...

I don't think you need it untill you get up around 100k miles. Then you can do that yourself and save $$. My prerunner has 120k miles and still running/shifting like new without having to changed the AT fluid yet. I might consider doing it around 180-200k miles. Do change the rear diffirential fluid though, that's more important to do and it's required per maintenance schedule. I don't off-road or pull anything heavy though

    good luck man

Well my schedule and all the dealers down here in South Texas say never to change AT fluid but I guess nothing lasts forever so I might consider changing it out around 180k-200k miles and it won't be at the dealer that's for sure.

I'm currently at 106,xxx miles and will change Trans fluid before 150,xxx hopefully. I also heard Valvoline Maxlife is WS compatible. I still have to change my diff fluids.

So, had this done yesterday at the dealership - which is a pretty good one as far as dealerships go...however, that's the only work they will do for me because I do most of it.

When I talked with the service manager, he informed me that they do everything with the fluid cold - even when they check levels. From everything I read on here, the tranny fluid has to be at a certain temp to make sure the level is correct. So why are they doing it cold?

Anyway, they did the service and if the tranny explodes or the like, then they are on the hook for it...

My service manager told me the same thing (that they do a complete flush) only to find out after talking with the mechanic the day of the appointment that they only do drain and fills... dirty bassturds were going to charge me for a complete flush!! :annoyed:

Interesting... Looking at the paperwork, the total price for the ATF alone was 110. Does that sound right?

Im not second gen, but 03 manual says that under normal driving conditions the tranny fluid should not need maintenance. I said screw that at 150 and did a drain and fill and it smoothed out alot. Gonna do another drain and fill before summer here in Tejas.
