WASHINGTON - Congressman Andy Barr released the following statement after meeting with the Honorable Thomas Tidwell, Chief of the United States Forest Service, and Mr. Doug Crandall, the Director of Legislative Affairs for the United States Forest Service. Congressman Barr requested this meeting in order to discuss the Forest Service’s proposed Cave Run Non-motorized Trails Initiative and the Sand Lick Fork Watershed Restoration Project.

“Today, I was pleased to meet with Chief Tidwell to register my serious concerns with two of the Forest Service’s projects underway in my district. In this meeting, I conveyed concerns brought to my attention by constituents in Bath County and Menifee County regarding the Forest Service’s proposed Cave Run Non-motorized Trails Initiative, specifically that each of the four Forest Service proposals either prohibit or limit the future use of trails currently enjoyed by and available to horseback riders. As we discussed the situation, I emphasized to Chief Tidwell that such restrictions to riders would largely threaten and deter equine-related tourism in the area, revenue from which is vital to the economic stability of these rural counties. I am encouraged that Chief Tidwell agrees that we need to find a mutually beneficial solution that would maintain the current levels of access for so many riders who enjoy these trails.

“Chief Tidwell and I also discussed the Sand Lick Fork Watershed Restoration Project. In my letter requesting this meeting, I emphasized to Chief Tidwell that several of the project’s proposed closures would negatively impact our ability to attract tourism to the Sixth District. I specifically explained to Chief Tidwell that action items in the project would be barriers to local tourism and recreation, particularly those that decommission or limit use of off-highway vehicle roads. We discussed the extraordinary efforts made by county leadership to promote local tourism, which in turn brings jobs to their communities and business to local restaurants and hotels. I was glad when Chief Tidwell acknowledged the importance of taking a closer look at these proposed closures that would negatively impact these local economies at a time when they can least afford it.

“I appreciate Chief Tidwell’s willingness to work with us on these important issues and I am encouraged that the Chief is going to take a closer look at both of these situations. I look forward to continuing to work with the Forest Service to find mutually beneficial solutions that will safeguard local tourism and recreation, which is vital to the economic stability of the Sixth District.”

On Wednesday, Congressman Barr will be continuing this conversation with Mr. Frank Beum, the Forest Supervisor of the Daniel Boone National Forest, and Ms. Marie Walker, the Public Affairs Officer for the Daniel Boone National Forest.

I'm going to school in ohio currently so... i guess you could say i'm living in ohio

 

I'm fixing to post up 3 rides that I know of in the Slade area in May. Anyone with other rides post them up and once my SAS is done the first of May I will also be planning my own rides for anyone interested. The first 2 rides are both on May 11th and are both good rides so its up to people to pick their poisen. The 3rd ride is a good ride and it is the Zoe Fire Department Benefit Ride and it will draw out alot of people. I went on the spring Zoe ride last year and there was 180 trucks I think.

 

That's right folks, this ride has gotten so popular that we're now doing it twice a year! Mark your calendars and tell your friends. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know the club if this is your first year or if you're considering joining. Non-club members are welcome!

Like the name says, this ride will be tailored to stock vehicles and inexperienced drivers. The only vehicle requirements are our general club rig requirements: http://www.kentuckykrawlers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1588.

Recovery points are mandatory and all vehicles will be inspected for them prior to the ride. Any rig without both front and rear recovery points will not be allowed to join the ride. A stock/mild vehicle WILL get stuck at some point, so consider this your 2+ months notice to get them installed!

DATE: May 11
LOCATION: Slade exit rest stop
TIME: Meet at 9am, drivers meeting at 9:30.

After the drivers meeting there will be about 20mins of pavement driving before getting to the trailhead with speeds up to 55mph, so we'll allow time to air down at the trailhead if you don't want to do it at the rest stop.

 

The Trailkeepers Foundation Will be hosting their spring cleanup at Slade Ky. on saturday May 11th 2013 Volunteers should meet at the Zoe Fire dept. at 9.30 for sign in. Please pack a lunch for the trail and bring any equipment you may need (gloves brush cutters etc.) We will provide a meal and prizes at the fire house at 4.30 pm. Everyone is welcome hope to see you there.

The spring fire department fundraiser ride is on May 18th 2013 meeting at the ZOE firehouse about 9 am, LEAVING for the trails about 10 am. The money raised will help pay for the day to day expenses incurred by the volunteer fire department that covers much of the areas we ride at Slade. There are multiple groups for different classes of rigs. The ride will be on some private land, as well as National forest lands as always. There is a cookout afterwards at the end of the day, and a $20 donation per rig is requested. These are great rides, supporting a great cause, so come out and be a part of it.

The fire department is right beside highway 11, just at the end of Zoe church loop.

The stock truck pretty much the same trail we took last time?

 

Yeah they usually run some of the trails we took but it really all depends on the trail leader for that day! There won't be anything any harder than what we did the day you all came up!
