It appears you cut them off straight with no bevels and welded them up. To get better penetration, you need to grind a bevel on the two pieces where they join, and weld it out to the edge of the steel. You only made one pass on these, didn't you? I think this thickness of joint will need multiple passes to make a strong connection. This looks like 1/4" material you are working with. Is this correct?

Needs better penetration. Either more heat or slow down. Not sure you'd need a second pass if you had better penetration.

Note taken on the beveling, any where that I join two pieces of plate together I usually bevel, I can try doing that to the butt type joints too.

And I wish I could just use more heat, but that's all my little welder has, its a fabricater 181i. I think its biggest downfall is that I have to run it off a 75' extension cord. At least until I get a real garage...

So I guess I will just have to slow down a wee bit.

    Thanks!

This is pretty cool, didn't know this thread existed (or I forgot) lol

I'm currently a welder for a company called Martin Sprocket & Gear.

Hopefully picking up an engine driven welder for the house tomorrow!

So Ian and Eric....above is the welder that was given to me. As stated before, I don't really know jack about welding and dude who gave me the welder said he doesn't have time to help me out.

So forgive me for asking what may be a dumb question but, do I need a gas cylinder with this welder?

If it's really just flux core, then no. You don't need gas. You do need flux core wire tho.

Not sure if this was directed towards me or not but it's a 2007 Miller Trailblazer 275 with the 23hp Kohler motor on it. Pics to come.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
That really depends on the mashine you dont have to run multple passes if the mashine can handle it. My miller 252's can run full pen in 1/2" in a single pass no problem. I do agree with the bevel.

Is there any downside to having a larger mig welder if you have the outlet to handle it? Would a larger 220v have problems with smaller projects and thinner metal?

No such thing as too big. Most mug machines can be set pretty low plus you can run smaller wire for thinner metal. Shielding gas and torch manipulation also determine how hot the weld is

How much do you think a lightly used millermatic 140 with a cart and gas tank would go for?

New, it's almost a grand for the machine (less the tank and cart). So maybe 750-900 range?

If you have 220v dont buy the 140v you will want more really soon. Buy the biggest you can afford you will be much happier in the long run. If you go miller the 211 or the 212 would be great for you. The 212 if you want a larger duty cycle but the 211 would work for most people.
