what are u getting for MPG??

Just filled up yesterday - getting 23+ mixed city/highway with the 4cyl, Prerunner Accesscab

 

With 1,500 miles on the clock, I'm steady at 21 mpg hwy, city or mixed.. LOL.. I thought I'd get a little better on the hwy, 23 at least but I've heard I'll get better mpg after the next few thousand miles.

 

I've owned my truck for 3 years now, and it's got 16,525 miles on it. I only drive it to and from work, Home Depot etc... Consistantly I get between 19-20 mpg city and have never checked a tank on the hwy. Air pressure is a huge factor in fuel mileage. Pump those puppies up tight and you will see the difference. I run 45psi front, and 40psi rear on my BFG AT's. If you run low pressures, you are creating drag. Also I would say the True Flow XDI has probably given me another mile per gallon at least. Hey, just be glad you drive a Toyota and not a Chevy, Ford, GMC or Dodge. Those guys are getting GPM not MPG. My 18 yr old nephew drives a 2002 GMC 2500 HD 4X4 (gas) lifted with 35's and gets about 8 mpg.

 

so what pressure should i have for my 305's Pro Comp Xtreme A/T's for better MPG

 

Well my friend, that will depend on what size wheel you are running. Is it a stock width rim or a wider rim? Also, read the tire for it's max cold pressure, but don't use that, it's just an inflation maximun. On a tire your size and tread design, you want the entire tread area to sit as flat on the pavement as possible. If you go with too much pressure, you will wear out the center of the tire, too little and you wear out shoulders and get a cupped tread effect. It's a balancing act but not one that's too hard to figure out. Never run the same pressure front to back on a pickup truck. There is almost no weight on the rear as opposed to the weight on the front.

the rim size is 17x9 I believe the tires are 305x65x17's

 

Okay, your cold max pressure is probably something like 50 or 60 psi, it could even be 80psi cold....but don't go there.
If I had those on my truck I would start with 45psi (front) and 40psi (rear). But it would be better to know the actual max pressure rating on the tire before you mess with them. That is a soft rubber compound tire, with a 6 ply tread and 3 ply sidewall. It's one bad ass tire, and you paid for them, so you want them to wear like a hogs nose.....

 

Sorry dude, you have the Xtremes, and for some reason I was thinking you had the Xterrains. Anyway, you have a 40,000 mile tread wear warranty with those bad boys, and that's a huge plus.

 

I get just over 18 mpg in town and anout 21 on the highway. I ONLY use 87 octane fuel because that is what the manufacturer specifies. Higher octane is a waste of $$$ and you get zero benifit from it.

 

Uh oh, I sense and ass-whuppin' comin' on!! I don't disagree with you, think that putting higher octane gas in a car/truck which specifies 87 is unnecessary, and I said so in another thread and got dog-piled!! But I'm a no0b here and didn't realize that this is a touchy and controversial subject.

I always thought it was a no-brainer that higher octane gas does NOT give you better mileage, in an engine that does not require it, such as the Toyota trucks we all drive. You are absolutely throwing your $ out the window if you use high octane fuel in a Tacoma with a stock motor.

dumped a bunch of highway miles on the truck this weekend... avg 17 mpg with 93 octane fuel. my wife has a prius, so whatever fuel i waste - she saves for me.

 

Eeeeooowww! We don't even have 93 octane reasonably available around here, our "premium" is 91, mid-grade is 89 and regular is 87.

How does your wife like her Prius? Most people who own them love them.

 

My understanding is that the 2nd gen. V6 Tacomas compression ratio is right on the border for needing the higher octane. It's even mentioned in the owners manual that 87 is a recommended grade but 91 will give higher performance. That's been backed up by some of the owners here at TacomaWorld.

 

Wifey loves her Prius... shocking, but it has great pickup and the package she chose has just about the same whistles and bells as my mom's lexus.

My 99 taco gets about 16-17 avg. I keep a precise log of my mileage. I hope to do a little better in the new taco to be. So many electronic gadgets I want to get and scan gauge is one. Wish they made it to blend a bit better with the dash/looks of the new tacos, it looks like it could be standard in the 99. Will report back with data.
