its a verizon iphone but unlocked for any gsm ( att / tmobile / h20 / etc prepay providers)

 

Ummm, that isn't possible... It is either GSM or CDMA, can't be both... Trust me, I've tried...

Verizon Wireless, Sprint, MetroPCS, Cricket, and U.S. Cellular are CDMA
AT&T & T-Mobile are GSM

umm yes it is possible while the link you posted only tells the difference between cdma / gsm it does not cover :

the verizon iphone 5 can be used on CDMA / LTE & GSM / LTE it is one of the only phones that has all the radios / antennas built in. Reason being is that its considered a "world phone" and if your on verizon you would need gsm capabilities if you were to travel abroad.

the Droid DNA is also another phone from verizon that can be used on gsm networks just a quick fyi

Apparently they've done something different in the iPhone 5 then, I've attempted it with the 4 & 4s with no success...

 

4 & 4s are GSM or CDMA only

while you can hop from att / tmobile / h2o/ boost etc... on a 4/4s gsm phone you cannot cross to cdma.

and on a cdma 4/4s you can go verizon/sprint > to cricket/metro but you cannot take a sprint phone and go to verizon or vice versa.

wrong 4s is able to be run on any carrier once unlocked, just like the 5. the 4 cannot.
