Transmission service or no

Fellas,
My 2004 Tacoma PreRunner 3.4L has over 66,000 miles on her, and I was wondering if I need to do anything to the auto tranny at this point in it's life. Sometimes when you have things "serviced", it can lead to problems. What do you think should be done, if anything at all?

 

Just do a drain and refill, it's supposed to be done every 2 years or 30K miles, whichever comes first.

 

Is this something that I can do myself? Or do I need some fancy transmission doohicky equipment? What all is involved?

 

1/2 socket and a socket wrench and transmission fluid

 

Drain and refill, do not have it flushed!
If it's really dirty, change it again a month or so down the road.

 

drain and refill is simple. when i did mine...i went the extra mile and unbolted the pan and cleaned the magnet off, and also cleaned the filter screen with brake cleaner...made new rtv silicone gasket, then bolted pan back up. it wasnt bad either.

 

What kind of tranny fluid do I buy, and how many quarts?

 

im pretty sure you'll need the toyota t-iv(t4) fluid, and i'd get 6 quarts to be safe. you can buy a case from the dealer and it'll be cheaper that way.

My repair manual is showing that my transmission doesn't even take 2 qts. of tranny fluid. Does this sound right? Also, do I fill thru the dipstick tube?

 

the manual is wrong as far as that goes. and yep...thru the dipstick tube. you need a long transmission funnel....they work alot better than the other funnels.

 

The manual is VERY wrong. My 2000 Taco owners manual says 2.1 quarts with drain and refill.... NOT. When I drained it it was a total of 5.5 quarts. I replaced the filter also, for $30, it is worth the investment.

 

How the hell are all these different manuals wrong??? Very strange.

 

Crazy huh? I knew something wasn't right when I pulled the plug and it kept a comin' out. I have a big 11 quart pan and it was half full. So I took the pan down, did my filter, etc. Pured in the "2.1" quarts it said I needed. IT NEVER EVEN REGISTERED ON THE DIPSTICK. I added the rest of the 3rd quart, still nothing(yes I started it up to check). So I had to send my wife to the parts store for 3 more quarts. I added them 1 at a time until I hit the cold mark when idling. Checked it running hot, and it ended up 5.5 quarts I needed. SO, where does Toyota get this 2 quart stuff?

You are right 2 different years, both wrong. How is this possible???
+ I have read on other websites the SAME thing with other people found the same issue.

 

Both my owners manual, and my Haynes repair guide show around 2 quarts for a drain and refill. Crazy. It will definitely take 5.5 quarts to do it, huh?

 

yes...thats why i recommend going ahead and getting at least 6 quarts.
