Contemplating getting a Tacoma

Hello all,
I am new to this forum and find it a tremendous asset. The folks here seem very knowledgable and considerate. Thanks.

I have been looking on Toyota's website for some time now, and am contemplating either he Tundra aor the Tacoma. At first, I wanted to get an FJCruiser, but I think a truck is more handy when need be.

Can anyone help me regarding which trucks to look into? Unfortunately, the Tundra does not come in a manual; I prefer the stick shift. I would definitely get the Double Cab 4x4. That's why I am leaning toward the Tacoma; the mileage is also better.

Also, does anyone know where to (once I decide on the truck) where I can get accessories (i.e. skid plates, snorkel, etc.) Any good sites?

You will be happy with your Tacoma forever, if you choose to do so.

 

A lot of the parts you won't find under one vendor. When it gets to specializing our trucks, you will usually have to find engine modifications (Snorkel, supercharger, CAI, Exhaust components, etc) from one vendor, while getting suspension components (shocks, coils, leaves, UCAs, etc) from a different vendor and fabricated stuff (skid plates, sliders, bumpers, etc) from a fabricator and audio/video and so on and so on.

Each one of those is on here as an official vendor, so just figure out what modifications you are interested in and they will help you out (with advice and discounts sometimes).

Will you ever need to tow/haul more than 6500lbs on a regular basis?
If NO - then get the tacoma.

The Tundra is just too 'big' of a truck unless you need it to tow/haul big stuff and use it regularly for that.

 

Get on line and do a lot of research locally before making up your mind. If you're in one of the towns or cities in Alaska check with your local Toyota dealer, keep an eye on Craigslist for possible trucks of interest, and don't get in too much of a hurry to seal the deal unless you're absolutely certain that what you're looking at is THE truck for you.

Once you've purchased your Tacoma, be it brand new off the dealer's floor or a real find from a local seller, then you can sort out what you want or don't want to do to it. Most of us take upgrades a step at a time once we determine what makes the most sense given what we use our trucks for. Truth be told a well outfitted double cab 4x4 Tacoma like you're in the market for, whether it be new or used, really doesn't need a whole lot of tweaking to make it what you're going to want or need it to be. ..That's one of the reasons we love 'em like we do!

 

JANSTER & RIONOVO: Thanks a lot for your advice. I agree with JANSTER regarding the amount towed is ocuring regularly. I, personaly, like the Tacoma's loks more. The Tundra is noice too, don't get me wrong, but it's just huge and the gas mileage is not that friendly.

RIONOVO: Yeah, you're right about the tweaking. I would put on rock sliders, a god skid plate and a snorkel. Then I'd tweak as need be.

how much will you be paying for the 2009 DC? Are you gonna wait closer to the end of the year and negotiate a better price.

Well if a dealer around here has a speedway blue to my liking then that's what I'll be going for and I'm looking to pay as close to $22-23K as possible. Keeping in mind they would add a premium on for the speedway blue and if they have to ship it in from somewhere or order it special.
Basically I'm looking to pay 22-23K, expecting to pay 23-24K.

Here’s a short (or maybe not) story about a former 2001 Prerunner Taco owner (to be called TO).

Three years ago said TO bought his first Taco. Said TO’s wife had a Rav4. Well said wife only drove 4 miles total each day, while the TO was driving 40 miles, but dang said TO loved that truck. Well the gas BS started, and said TO found a great deal on a 97 4Runner, and traded the Taco in for it. This TO dill weed gave the 4Runner the wifey, and decided to drive the Rav4.

Well from what I have heard, said TO finally became totally sick of having to place his “man package” in the passenger seat just to drive home from work.

So to sum up, said TO was a grand fellow, and gave his mother the Rav4, and went and got a sweet 04 4x4 Taco, and lived happily ever after!

True story, I swear!!

Once you got Taco, you never go back!

 

That'd be a great price. The ones I have seen with all rebates in the Tacoma Wash. area are hovering around $27,700. That'd be a Double Cab Manual Transmission with the TRD Offroad package.

Where will you buy it for that "lower" end price?

What is your reasoning for this Wilson?

 

In Norther California, Bay Area I've seen double cab short bed TRD Sport auto 4x2's at $27,699...but it seems they recently dropped the MSRP since I just built one online and it came out to $27,555.

I'm going to buy it from the dealer and in the end ti will probably take a few days but if they don't like my price I will probably just walk out and wait until they give me a price I find satisfactory.
