O ya, he's an auto. Not sure about Toyota, but for GM auto's you need a special pressurized machine to properly do it. Can't just drain and fill.

Oh ok I see. Well thanks. I gotta bring my truck in to have the spare tire carrier replaced under the recall so I'm might just ask them how much it is to do all of it. Or I might go to ntb. I know the guy there and maybe he can hook me up.

It's more just the way auto trans are built/ operate. A manual trans is just a bunch of gears on shafts inside a case filled with trans fluid. Auto trans has torque converter, clutch packs, check balls, small fluid passages, solenoids, etc.. and the gears. It usesthe pressure of the fluid in the trans to operate. Just emptying it will not get the old fluid out all the components inside.

Front end, rear end and transfer case. If the truck has never had the transmission flushed, you'll get mixed opinions as to whether or not you should start now. I just did a drain and refill on my truck. It only gets about 1/3 of the fluid out but it does not flush the torque convertor.

You can drain and refill them, you only need the special machine to flush the torque convertor.

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.
If you're going to learn, and do all this shit to ensure that the truck is good to go, you may as well do the power steering and the brake fluid as well as everything else listed off by the other guys. None of it is rocket science, except for the auto trans. Do some googling, check the TW threads, go get a good manual. If anything, by the time you're done you'll have a solid understanding of your vehicle and its systems.

i'm sure NTB or jiffy lube would be fine so long as they use a fluid which meets the specs that Toyota recommends in the manual. It's not difficult, hook machine up, fill machine with fluid, press button, wait for machine to complete cycle. Unhook machine, done.

Good call on the brake fluid. Definitely one of the most overlooked fluids on a vehicle.

You need a machine. U can drop the pan and change filter and refill but not as good as a flush. Both have their draw backs. With a flush you can't change the filter but u get new fluid. With the filter change you don't get all new fluid only about 45% new.

What he said, you'd maybe get about half of it out if you're lucky. That goes for any slushbox, just we know more than we used to about it. My Camaro was how I first learned this when I pulled the trans out.

I thought the 'filter' was just some stupid little metal screen, not an actual filter that you'd have to change out.

x2. Completly forgot about this. Really easy to do, just takes patience. I've got a pressure bleeder, which makes it really easy for you to do solo. They do inject air into the fluid because of the way they work, but for a DD pickup truck it's fine. If you had a track car you'd want to do it manually to ensure as little air got into the fluid as possible.

Bleeding them manually is very easy too, just time consuming and requires a partner. If doing it manually don't jam the brake pedal all the way to the floor. It an overextend the rod and harm the slave.
