Carnage Report - Got hit this morning.

I like the look of the sport better - besides ill be changing the suspension set up anyway.

I've got to test drive the wrx to see if i could even live with it and try to decide in a few days.

 

I had an 05 xrunner, and now I own a 12 TRD OR. I like the new steering wheel compared to the old one. I can't say which one was more responsive, because the xrunner wins hands down. However, I like the styling on the 12+ much better, both in and out.

Another option you might want to look into is the slightly redesigned Tundra that comes out in a few months...

I think the exact opposite. I am glad for you that it got totaled. If it were fixed, even to nearly perfect, you would still be taking a hit in truck value when you sell it. And the stories of vehicles not being fixed, and ongoing problems and fights with insurance to fix other little problems after the fact is super annoying and puts a really bad taste in ones mouth about the vehicle. I basically want any of my cars that are in accidents to be totaled (with me being unhurt of course).

I am rocking a 13 Sport and like "almost" everything about it. As you also observed, I dont really like the steering wheel. The shape is better than my 06 and I like the feel. What I dont like is the hard plastic in the area of the outer wheel. Worse than that though is the VSC. I put a 1.5 AAL and 5100's on and my VSC goes nuts. It goes off almost EVERY day.....scratch that, it goes off more than once EVERY day. It is really ridiculous. If the dealer puts your AAL on, you can hold them responsible for the VSC, and many others havent had any problem at all.

Oh, the 13 Sport comes with 4 leaves, but I dont think they are as supportive as the TSB leaf set. I was super disappointed as I did not want to put an AAL on the truck, but I absolutely had to because I haul dirtbikes and tow sleds way too often to have that thing draggin a$$ all the time.

Glad to hear it got taken care of. I came from a lifted Tundra, to a WRX, to a Tacoma. I loved the WRX, and it was a blast to drive, but I'll always be a truck guy. I'd rather be able to go anywhere than to be able to get some places quick.

 

Skunkman if it comes available Ill keep you in mind although it doesnt look like it will. I just test drove a VW Golf R, 2L TFSI with K04 turbo 256 hp AWD with was getting 20-24 while driving it like I stole it - damn it.

Downside, decked to the 9's it was 37k - but the car felt solid. I've only ever driven trucks, maybe it's time I try a car - and If I need to, I can always get another Tacoma. Still going to test drive a wrx (although the STI is comparable to the Golf R) - I'm told the interior fit and finish is rubbish compared to the VW.

Please Please Please Don't hate me if I go with a car - the sad truth is I use my truck like a truck maybe once a year - and I'm left wanting something with a big more punch on nice summer days - will demanding awd for winter driving.

We will see. Sad day for the truck for sure.

 

to be honest I only put 57k on the tacoma in 5 years, and I will probably trade the vw in in 5 years for something new, so.. may be a non-issue.

My buddy had a GTI and put over 100k miles on it in a span of like 6 years - no issues at all, except when he hit a guard rail down by the city. Body work aside the car was solid - I will admit reliability was a ?? for VW's - but early ago they were known for electrical issues, and from what I hear from friends who own them the issues seem to be well worked out.

 

My buddy has a GTi that didn't make it past 30k miles before he had been into the dealership so many times that he just got rid of it.

 

I know I would be giving up on some reliability, but I think I just need a car for a change, Like I said for the past 11 years I've only driven trucks. Even if its just for 4-5 years.

I already got the price down to 34k (from 37k), which is close to the 32k for the new tacoma as spec'd.

it is essentially a Audi TT-RS chassis/drivetrain with a 4 door body.

 

The Golf R is a nice little car... However, All of those driving aids cannot be turned off making it a little less fun drive.

I would go STI, Evo, 335IX before considering a Veedub.

 

I saw that, but using the vagcom - you can reprogram it so you can turn stability control off - an added pain for sure. Not 100% on anything - i am going to take a few days and think everything over.

 

I traded in my Tundra and got a mercedes. I cant tell you how fast it was before I needed a truck and how many times I needed a truck. It was crazy. When the warranty ran out on the Benz, I got rid of it and got my Taco. I use it as a truck constantly. FOr the more spirited driving on weekends I got the vette.

 

I'm still very torn, planning on testing the STI today, maybe the BRZ for grins, possibly the focus st - I really wish we could get the A3 Tdi Quattro with 6 speed manual that would be epic, or hell, the tacoma with the D4D.

Maybe I should take a trip to mexico - they sell the Hilux there.

I owned a 2010 Golf 2.5. In the year and a bit that I owned it, I was hearing horror stories about electrical and things failing. The more and more I heard, the more I wanted to get rid of the vehicle. I didn't want to be holding the bag for issues with a VW, even though all my maintenance is done. Then I bought a Toyota. I feel so much better now.

 

Haha Skunkman sorry- the hood rests atop a resting truck that was once mine.

VW/Audi were plagued by electrical issues in the 90s and early 2000's - from what I have heard from people who have purchased VW/Audi's in the past 2-3 years they have had no problems. It's hard to come back from bad rep like that - it's still a concern and its an important factor to consider. Consider this - the tacomas had an unknown with their frames when I purchased mine but I had faith that they resolved the issues.

The tacoma is a legendary truck - it is not an easy decision to move away from one. The Golf R is a completely different animal - it is the drivetrain from an Audi TT-S, the frame design is similar (but slightly heavier) - and it uses the same AWD system as the Lambo Aventador Ala Quattro (4-motion) haldrex. topped with a 4 door hatch which makes it practical. Torn is an understatement.

For the money - I can get the VW for 3-5 more depending on what I could talk the price down on the Tacoma as I want it (loaded) - the interior of the VW is a very nice place - fit and finish is some of the best. I know these things are designed to do two very different things - but when it comes down to it I don't tow anything, I think I have used the truck bed 3-4 times the entire time I have owned it - which makes it hard to justify the 17 mpg avg I was getting (the VW was getting 24 mpg city when I was driving it heavy footed.

I only put on 10-11k miles a year avg, when you add the insurance check Im getting,I am getting a brand new 37+k car for 14k (what I would finance). Add low APR rates right now and it makes this a tough call. Do I pay 8K for a new taco that stickers around 32k or go for the sporty little hatch.

Anyone who thinks this is a easy choice is nuts - I don't think I could go to the dealer and finance a 37K car (something about that would bug me - too expensive for one) but because I'm getting this big check this puts that car in my reach. If that makes sense.

Tough one for sure.

Man, i'm in a similar situation. I totaled my truck about two weeks ago and have been debating what to get next. I hate making these kinds of decisions!
