yep - calling b.s. on that. especially since I use a good local Toyota mechanic. not sure why you'd ever take it to the dealer unless that's your only option.

Copper plugs. And I'm just fine with it. My Corolla specs 120,000mi between spark plug changes, but I do them every 50k myself. I don't like leaving plugs in for long periods for many reasons, including fuel economy and increased risk of galling.

Just did my third plug change at 97K. I gap the plugs to .040 when new, and when they come out they are usually right around .050. This is using the stock Denso plugs. MPG goes up a little after changing them, just got 23.4 on a 300 mile trip last week right after I changed plugs.

There is a super easy to follow write up on how to change them on TW. It takes a max of two hours taking your time and isn't that complicated.

I have done the maintenance by the book since I got this truck, and so far have not had a single problem in 97K.

Routine maintenance on this truck is very easy to DIY, surprisingly so compared to most newer vehicles.

FWIW, i just did my 90k service (which i think is the same as 30k, mostly) and it cost me 250 +/-ish just for oils/filters.

I guess I could have worded that better. But Let's allow an hour to drain and refill both diffs and the transfer case.

A half hour to remove the brackets, air filter assembly, coil packs, remove old plugs, apply anti seize, apply the proper torque to the new plugs to crush the crush gasket, and re-instal everything!

Unless you are one of the top mechanics in a pit crew at a NASCAR event, I wouldn't want you anywhere near my vehicles. I would love to see someone do their plugs on this engine in 30minutes correctly and without incident.....

I just got a coupon in the mail that said "30k maintenance for Toyota vehicles starting at $129.99". I don't like the words "starting at" because that means it only goes up from there.

OP, thanks for sharing your experience with us. When it is time for my next service, I'm going to have everything explained on paper beforehand.

All the fluids (syn gear oil) all the filters and plugs $214 at NAPA so with dealer labor I can see that kind of money provided they did every thing.

After reading all 29 posts which were helpful, I drafted up a two page letter and went to the dealer and complained asking for a 50% reduction in my bill showing that it wasn't properly explained to me at all, that extra work was done without my request, that the normal charge should have been much less, etc.

Thanks to Tacoma World I have $350 in my pocket that I didn't have before.

I figure in the future I need to (a) take the scheduled maintenance to a reasonable dealer and only ask for that or (b) take it to an independent, or (c) buy the tools and do part of all of it myself.

    Thanks. Richard

I used to live in Bellevue, but just moved to Coeur d'Alene Idaho. For the 30,000 mile service Michaels Toyota in Bellevue quoted $360 and Parker Toyota in Coeur d'Alene quoted $198.
