i have searched around but can't seem to find any pictures of what people have done with their front mud flaps.
i have very minimal rub on the protruding bump on the mud flaps just in front of the cab mount. it's the only spot where there is a little rub but it's annoying and loud when i am turning at full lock, i have a tight parking spot at home so it's a lot.
i need to keep them, mainly because of the crap weather i drive in for most of the year.
i am just going to try to shave the bump off, but want to see what other people have done.

    thanks.

Not exactly sure what bump you're talking about. I trimmed my front flaps because they were too long. I used the rear flaps as a template and trimmed the fronts to match using a jigsaw. I think they look ok and are definitely still strong/rigid enough. Also bought a set of weathertech flaps for the front but haven't put them on yet because I'm not sure how they'll look with the stock rear flaps.

Here are a couple of pics (sorry: crappy phone pics). I'm running Duratrac 265/75R16s with no lift and no rubbing at all.

hey, thanks for the reply. it's a little hard to explain, but if you look on the inside of your front mud flap (the side facing the tire) there is a little bump about half way up that kind of sticks out in front of the cab mount (i think it's the cab mount), it's not huge, but with my new rims and their different backspacing, it rubs there.
my tires are basically the same size as yours, 265/70/17, it's just the new rims. i'll have to take a picture when i get home from work.

Makes sense now but I don't think you could do much about that bump without trimming your fender flares or lifting another inch or so. That bump is there to accommodate the bottom lip of the fender flare. The weather techs I haven't installed yet have the same bump.

You could try removing your flaps to see if it rubs the fender. If not, a thinner rubber mudflap may work.

Personally, I wouldn't run without flaps because your tires with throw a lot of rocks and chip your paint up pretty bad.

On second thought, there is a lot of plastic around that area. I'd say you could safely grind down the area that rubs your tires without risking damage to the flap.

If it's only in a hard turn, the area to be grinded down should be minimal.

it's actually the lower area, it's quite close to the edge of the mud flap so if i shave it down, there might only be an inch at the most holding that side together. i was also a little worried about not taking enough off and then the tread of the tire grabbing hold of the edge of the area i trim and ripping everything apart.
i was wondering if anyone else had some rubbing there and what they did.
i definately need to keep them on.

I know of which bump you are talking about, what I did was let the tires rub for a week or so, then take a cut off wheel {which is the easiest way} and cut off the shiny plastic from the tire rubbing.

as a side note that bump is for clearance for the bottom of the flare and theres room between the flap and flare so you don't cut the flare, {should end up being about an inch or inch1/2 square} I did this about two years ago and have not had any probs with the flaps even tho the tire still touches it occasionally

I put on some husky liner flaps. I'm happy with them...just looked at my stock ones, and I see that bump you're talking about. It doesn't look like they husky's have them if you look at the second pic?

thanks, that is probably what i'll end up doing. it's a pretty small area where the tires are rubbing.

thanks, i am going to look into those, might work better then having a hole cut in my stock ones. where did you get yours? how much?

I cut the hole you are talking about. Never took any pics that I can remember though. I ended up ripping them off so many times wheeling I just took them off.

I say just go grab a Dremmel and start cutting. If you mess them up your already thinking of getting Husky's so whats the loss. If it works out you save $$ if not no biggie.

did the tire tread catch on the area you trimmed? that is the only part i am worried about. i would like to just remove them altogether but i can't with the crap roads and weather where i live.

Only offroad with 265/70/17's and modified suspension with about 1" lift.

I fully understand. I drove with mine on until they shredded from being pulled off so many times.

If you stay on road once trimmed I expect they wouldn't be an issue. Ill keep an eye out for them today when I clean out my shed. If I find them Ill take a shot.

I had the same problem at full lock. Installed a flat universal mud flap without the lip and it stopped. There are a handful of companies that make them at varying prices. I chose Proven Design, although slightly more expensive, because I wanted to maintain close to a stock look.

cool, thanks. im running basically the same set-up as you, 5100's at 1.75 but i won't be doing any hardcore 4x4ing so it should do the job if i go that direction.

thanks, i am definately going to look into doing this now, the ones you have look pretty good.

old thread but adding for those doing a search for this...
Toyo 275/70r17 R/T Trails cleared the cab mount by around 1/2" at full lock... had to remove mud flaps though. Trimmed flaps to clear. Also, trimmed an inch off bottom of back flaps... ended up around 12.5" from bottom of flap to the ground... trimmed bottom of fronts to match. Used oscillating cutting tool, dremel pin router, and heat gun.
