Airbag Light is on, and its expensive to fix!!

So I took my truck to the stealership, and thought that my extended warranty, which isnt a Toyota one didnt cover the airbag system. The clock spring is bad, and to fix, quote them is $550. Anyone ever fixed this on thier own? Im not paying that much to fix it.

 

Airbags are one of those systems that imho it's better to pay and let them deal with it.

If you fuck it up and that shit goes off it'll cost you WAY more to get the new parts (upwards of 3-4 grand). If you fuck it up and don't find out until the airbags are supposed to deploy and don't- or deploy at the wrong time....You can be in a HUGE world of hurt.

It sucks to pay that much...but for me- it's peace of mind.

Accident isn't TECHNICALLY the correct term. Someone always does something to cause a collision/ollision/out of control damage situation.

It's easy to say that you won't do that...A bit harder to actually do. What the other people on the road do- TOTALLY not under your control. It's worth having operational safety devices.

How many miles are do you have on your truck? Airbag is covered under the Toyota 6yr/60k mi powertrain warranty.

 

People don't crash on purpose...most of the time anyway. It's usually an accident

 

Talk to a cop or insurance appraiser-The term accident doesn't get used when discussing traffic mishaps.

And I didn't say a person meant to CRASH...but they do usually mean to speed or just slide into that open spot or get to work on time in the bad weather... etc etc....and that leads to the "accident".

Edit: I know it's semantics and technicalities....but my point was that OTHER people do stupid stuff that puts you at risk and having a safety system out of commission is a bad idea.

same problem i'm having and mines an 08 check the thread warranty issues i posted yesterday.

 

they say it's not and it coverd under the restraint system warranty if it makes my airbag light come on it's part of the system that is suppose to be coverd i smell a law suit comming on!!!!

 

i think if u pull out the fuse, and unplug your battery, i dont see why the air bag would deploy. if u can tackle it yourself, just find the right info and do it.

 

Im at 74k miles...I thought of that. The service manager was actually very helpful for me with trying to finagle the warranty company and the dealer I bought it from (300 mi away), but no luck.

 

I'm getting mine fixed for free toyota calls it good will I call it my uncle the car whole saler his dealer called mine and said you could be liable for not fixing it.

 

You could replace it your self, if you're mechanically inclined. The hardest part is making sure you wind the clockspring properly, so the cable doesn't bind when you turn the wheel. They come set up from the factory, and there's a plug to keep it from unwinding. It sits under the steering wheel, so if you can take the air bag off, and remove the wheel, the jobs mostly done.

ALWAYS disconnect the battery, not fuses, when working on airbags.

If you're not comfortable working around airbags, then don't.

 

i have the same problem on my 06 tacoma 2.7 single reg cab....been like that for about a year now.... if that light is on does it mean that the passengar airbag will not work also?

 

I think that it might not work. Theres no way to tell.

 

Only the defective part won't work. The air bag system is very complex, and basically takes care of itself.

So, if you have a LH seat belt pre-tensioner that's not working, the rest of the system keeps on working as it's supposed to. It also performs system checks on itself every few seconds, and can pin point problems by itself.

In the case of the OP, his air bag under the steering wheel isn't functioning properly, but if he was in an accident it may still deploy, depending on how bad his clock spring is messed up. The rest of his air bags and pre-tensioners should operate as normal.
