Is there any reason that I couldn't/shouldn't cut the Exhaust right behind the Axle?

Title says it all. I hate the way the exhaust looks hanging off the back of the truck. Is there any reason that I couldn't / Shouldn't cut the exhaust off on the downturn right after it goes over the rear axle? I was going to put a small tip painted black to go on the end of it once it's cut? Any negative effects?

Me and a couple other first gens cut ours off maybe 7-8 years ago, just past the axle. No issues. 2nd gen.... not so sure.

 

I figure I'll cut it off. I can't stand the look and I don't want to get it hung up on anything. If I die I'll die looking good

 

The carbon monoxide risk is not a 100% given. It is simply a fact that idling in traffic DOES cause it to build up under the cabin and bed. While many have obviously had no ill effects that they know of from this, the risk is still there. Also, carbon monoxide poison does not always kill. It can cause headaches and other problems as well.

 

You would think so, however it can still get there. The fumes build up under the bed quickly, and then as they escape they can get under the cab still. There has been numerous tests performed by GM, Ford, and Dodge years ago. One of the courses I took when I was training for GM was specifically on exhaust leaks and carbon monoxide. It covered the many ways it is possible for a leak that is under the bed to get into the cab.

 

My 2001 Extended cab was chopped off in front of the bed cab seam, it was fine. If you sat still on a completely calm day you may get a hint of the exhaust, but in most cases, there is enough moving air around your truck even when stopped to dissipate any high level emissions.

The cab pressure release vent should only open with positive cab pressure, like when closing your doors. Most likely source of these emission gasses entering your truck, an open window, not some tiny little hole. Path of least resistance.

Keep in mind, if you're sitting in traffic you will likely either have the windows open or the HVAC fans running and windows closed. Windows open, no big deal, windows closed, the cab is slightly pressurized from the fan so while there is a very slight risk of CO seeping into the cab while sitting in traffic, it's not likely. How many large box trucks have theose turn down exhausts right after the muffler, just after the cab? Unless you have a shell and keep animals in the shell, I wouldn't be overly concerned with CO poisoning as a deterrent.

 

1st gen here. Cut my pipe right after the axle. No issues!

 

CO is slightly lighter than air but mixes very well with it (byproduct of being a HazMat Tech with my job). The amount of moisture, temp, etc... has to be taken in to account also.

I actually started this thread with more of a concern with a performance / damage issue that may arise by cutting my exhaust after it turns down over the rear axle not CO levels (although very important and something I didn't consider).

My personal opinion (everyone has one) is that: if you are sitting in traffic even on a calm day that the exhaust would dissipate before it entered your cab unless you had your windows down. As someone stated earlier the pressure vents (if working properly) should hold out most of the exhaust. Along this line of thinking... If sitting still in traffic I personally think that you would be getting a fair share of other peoples' exhaust along with yours. This of course is just my opinion and not a definitive answer. I'm still undecided if I am going to do the mod or not.

 

What about state inspections. Will it pass

 

On a side note Pugga, I changed my PIAA's to the High Beam Circuit. You were right.

 

Oddly enough Arkansas doesn't do state inspections anymore. Stopped that over 20 years ago. Backwards fucking state. No way it would pass in Cali I bet lol
