I use ethanol free gas. I haven't noticed a difference in mpg, but it calms the "toyota tick".

I use it when I'm close to a station that sells it. On average I probably get 1mpg more with E0 and my truck runs much smoother.

Just got my Tacoma, so I haven't had a chance to really put it through tests, but I know my Mazda 3 Hatchback gets right at 300 miles to a tank (or less) on ethanol gas and close to 350 miles with no-ethanol. I stick with no ethanol if possible. I'll put ethanol in it when I'm not able to find a place with pure. I definitely notice a difference.

Ethanol gas costs more. Its usually 10-20 cents more per gallon where I live.

Just look around. Where I live, stations put up big banners or have it on their sign "No Ethanol" or "100% pure gasoline" or something like that. Some stations even have some pumps where you can choose if you want "100% gas" or "up to 10% ethanol". Its random, but in my area there are plenty of no ethanol stations. I know which ones have "good gas" compared to ones that don't.

Always get better mileage when in Mexico, no ethanol added there.

I'll add this tidbit. My '86 SR5 4x4 manual absolutely HATES ethanol, to the point that it will nearly die while shifting gears because it runs so rough with it. It doesn't idle well and for some reason it is worse when its super hot outside (100+ degrees). I couldn't figure out what was causing it until I switched to no ethanol. It cleared the problem right up.

I've read that older cars run worse with ethanol because it burns hotter than pure gasoline. More tolerance in the engine coupled with hotter temperatures can make the valves rattle a bit more, it runs rougher, and has less power/efficiency. I avoid ethanol when possible, ESPECIALLY in older vehicles. My wife's VW Passat doesn't seem to mind ethanol, though. It gets about the same mileage with ethanol or non-ethanol gas.

Only places I see it are close to water - boats and ethanol don't mix well. I was in Tallahassee last year and a lot of stations down there were advertising it - they're only about 45 minutes from the Gulf.

Ethanol leans out the mixture, so you need to richen up the A/F to get it to run "right" - hence the better MPG when on the pure stuff. Modern cars can handle the 10% (or E85 for some), but older cars don't like it.

I don't know exactly how much better it was, but my mileage did improve while using pure gas with no ethanol.

I have been wondering about which is better, using ethanol-free gas that is a no-name brand or using a "top-tier" branded gas that is supposed to be better with extra additives and whatnot.

There are a several ethanol-free stations around where I am, but only one or two are from a known brand of gas. Oh the dilema...

I've heard that a lot of gas comes from the same refineries, and that some places basically "guarantee" the gas when the slap their name to it. I could be wrong about that, though.

Find non ethanol fuel. Use it. Enjoy the 3-5MPG gain from using it.

I think E85 cars have yellow gas caps.

Definitely don't want to make that mistake....

I think you might be a little optimistic there.... I can see 1-2, but not that much more.
