06 x-runner slipping out of 2nd gear

I just purchased a used x-runner a couple of weeks ago...LOVE IT!
however, i have noticed that it tends to "slip" out of 2nd gear quite often. it doesn't pop out, just softly slips out, and the tranny starts grinding...weird...anyone have any similar experiences?

it's still under factory warranty, i should just take it in i suppose!

 

welcome to TW sandie, if your vehicle is on warranty. i say make an appointment with your dealer to have this fixed. if the problem continues, i think three times is the limit the dealer sold you a lemon and you'll end up with a new vehicle congrats on your taco when you have time post it on the gallery.

 

ugh...i didn't even think about having to have the transmission replaced!!! yikes!

 

well you still have the warranty but be aggressive about it. sorry but sometimes when you sign the dotted line of the "as is" clause the dealers think you already knew the problem and you'll fix it yourself. be careful see what else you could find wrong in your taco. so they could take care of it all in one sitting. hope this helps.

 

well, long story short...after months of taking it into the dealership, including having the shifting mechanism replaced, they FINALLY ended up replacing my tranny. i'm kinda bummed that it needed a new transmission, but i'm happy to finally have a truck that doesn't pop outta second! drives like a brand new truck

 

I'm sorry that was such a PITA, but it is good that everything is working as it should now. Glad to see that you are back on the road and back on TW!

Similar story...

Toyota will be replacing my 6 speed that doesn't always go all the way into first and grinds going into 5th. They tried to blame it on the shifter so I let them replace that first. No complaints though, now I'm going to have a new shifter and a new transmission! My throw-out bearing is noisy as well so they will be replacing that at the same time. I spend way too much time at the dealership, they all know me by first name now.

 

I had my throwout bearing replaced awhile back. The squeaking it made was awful.

 

is THAT what that squeaking is!

i think i'm going to take her back in for that ticking noise too...sheesh this car better last forever

side note, my sister's 97 toyota truck just rolled over 200k on our trip from socal to indiana and it's still running strong!

 

When these trucks are well maintained and aren't abused too much i've heard of them hitting 300k. that wont be a hard number to reach considering how much i love driving mine

 

Just put some pressure on the clutch pedal, if the noise stops or changes then you've found your squeak. Otherwise get out the mouse traps. ;-)

 

teknishun, do you know if there's a service bulletin for the throw out bearing as well? thanks!

 

There is no TSB out for the throwout bearing. Best way to know if it's the throwout bearing is to see if you get the noise when the clutch is out, but goes away as soon as you push it in.

 

i'm getting a lot of noise from my clutch, as i engage it and disengage it...maybe thats just a squeeky clutch?

 

The guys at this dealership never tell me anything. It could be, when I said it was making noise they did even ask to hear it, they just ordered it so they could put it in at the same time as the tranny.

I can tell you there was a TSB for the hard to push clutch pedal. If your pedal seems hard to push at all I would mention this to them. Mine is so much smoother now. It actually got so bad my leg would hurt after driving the truck for long periods of time. It's not even like it was just heavy though, it was more like a lack of lubrication. I could hear it creaking like an old door hinge.

 

thats exactly what mine sounds like (good description!), but it doesn't seem hard to push to me.

Get it replaced anyway! You'll feel the difference I bet.
