Unfortunately for you, I think those guys are smokin crack. Mine is an 11 but is the same model. It doesn't rattle while sitting in neutral.

As stated earlier I have some loose plastic over the wheel well, but that's only when on bumpy roads.

If it's not moving, the driveshaft is not turning... there's nothing to cause the "play" to rattle.

Find another dealer. These jackasses are blowing you off.

just to clarify it rattles when i hit a bump or when on a rough road when I'm driving, so the drive shaft is turning, its not when it just sits there.

That's the kiss of death from that dealer. Of course, it's total BS, but you are going to need to take it to another dealer and try again. Don't mention this first fiasco though.

It doesn't matter what the root cause of the rattle is--a new truck should NOT rattle. I'm getting irritated just thinking about this.... Grrrrr.

do you have a tsb number? my investigations have led me to around this area of the truck and I'm rationalizing this as when the truck is under load all the slack is out of the bearing but when its in nuetral or clutch in the load is off the front off allowing a rattle over bumps. this is driving me nuts and I want some ammo to take to the dealership. I'm getting tired of hearing " we drove another truck on the lot and it does it so it must be normal " / rant off

the carrier bearing its definately not the steering shaft the noise is coming from around the transmission area or slightly behind.

just an update on my issue,
i put the truck in 4 wheel and while cruising down the road the noise went away. When i got home i went under the truck and rotated the front driveshaft by hand and noise seems to be coming from the lower gear in the transfer case. Anybody? anything? its going back to the dealership for sure.

Sounds like you have the bad bearing issue like a lot of people have. Check it out search front diff vib. I had mine replaced under warranty. A shity design by Toyota for sure.
    Thanks,

    Brett

Ok so lets try to eliminate a couple of things. Are you lifted? Prob not but it doesn't matter and has happend to stock trucks also. If you can crawl under the truck and grab the cv shaft on the drivers side where it goes into the diff, see if you can wiggle it around a little. Check for excessive play ( in and out, side to side etc) now after that grab the passenger side and try to do the same. ( the cvs should be fairly tight into the diff ) if the driver Side has more play or slop in it it's a bad bearing on the inside of the diff. My truck had the same problem, both bearing and driver cv shaft was replaced under warranty.
Let me know what you find? If its got slop in it that's the problem. Focus on this and not the transfer case. I bet that's the issue you have.

    Thanks,

    Brett

If you have a trailer hitch check the reciever. Mine fit loose and made a clunk noise when going over bumps.

I took my truck in yesterday and drove a service guy.. It made the noise at 30mph 1,500rpm. He said it sounds like "Pre ignition" and asked me what type of gas I use. I left it with them to look at..

i dropped my 2013 trd 2wd tacoma off yesterday for rattle noise. i had service tech ride with me to hear it. it makes the wheel of fortune noise at 1,300rpms at 30mph. he said it sounds like "pre ignition" and maybe i need to change my gas octane..

today service tech called and said they "contacted Toyota" and it is being review since no cause or way to fix.. other tacomas have same problem.

    not happy.

It's not the octane. Don't accept that for an answer.
If they push the issue, show them in your owner's manual under "recommended fuel"

    The 2.7 requires regular.
The 4.0 can benefit from premium, but it does not require more than regular.

If you are getting preignition, the knock sensor is not working... it will cause the ECU to retard the timing to prevent knock, which can permanently damage the engine.

If you are just cruising at 1300@30 and it's knocking, something is seriously wrong.
It would only knock under acceleration.

I am not going to accept it.. I think it's a serious issue. I have to work it up the chains now I guess.
It does only knock under acceleration
