I bought a 1996 because of the glass headlights. The styling on them isn't all that great, but I prefer glass to plastic because in sunny SoCal, all the plastic lenses fade badly. I'm going to get some glass lenses with replacable bulbs so that I can get a little better night performance out of them.

jcwhitney has couple different sets of the conversion lights... they used to have a set made by a company eagle something I keep thinking.

glass with h4 headlight, I have had few sets still have the one set.

well sense i just baught an 09 tacoma ext cab you'd think that is the face i like the best. How ever the 00-04 is by far my fav. its got the looks, its built simple, with out to many bells and whistles that would just get broke on the trail.
My 09 defiently has a destiny, ill be building it as more of a baja open road go fast, next year i will hopefully be buying a 00-04 and building it as a trail truck with D60s SAS.
The 00-04 Definetly has the best of all worlds tho, Power , Looks, Functionality, Its still narrow enough to fit threw tight trails. Awesome truck all around

The comments about the 98-00 having headlights too large and always yellow is so right! When I got mine I hated the headlights, I originally planned on swapping the front end when I made the purchase. When I first bought my truck they were yellowed out and looked horrible, it looked goofy. I soon replaced them with new stock lights, they looked good but still they just dont proportion right with the truck.

I think the problem is they dont have any shape to them, its like they styled the whole truck and then said lets throw it on the production line, just fill the huge whole with a big un-styled light. haha

I now I have some Ebay lights with the black in them and I think they look fantastic. I tinted my corners black and it has a much better shape to it, not too big like it was. I love the un-ribbed tails, smaller mirrors and other little things on the 98-00 better than the 01-04 but I hate those factory 98-00 headlights. The glare in my pictures makes them look lighter than they are but its an idea.

01-04 looks ok but there 50 bajilion of them around. if i see a first gen taco, it is always 01-04, im sick of it. i like the simple of the 98-00 but it looks alot like a ranger.
