Hey Jace, do you think it's cool to run 85 in our 2nd gens at this altitude?

 

You're right radar doesn't look bad at all actually. I'm on the north side of town... it sounds like it's chillin out a bit now too.

We've not had snow in the lower eles here in a few weeks. NOAA said this storm could drop up to 3" snow in the passes though. Word.

 

Awesome, in the manual it says run 87 or higher but I had heard the blend of 85 out here is fine.

Manuals are printed for sea-level. Without getting too technical 85 here is like running 87 so if the manual calls for 87 you can get away with 85. One word of caution is that if you're running 85 octane here and go down to lower elevation (Nebraska, Kansas, da dirrty south aka Pueblo ) on a cooler day you may get some knock activity which your ECU will adjust timing for. Not a situation you want to run around in prolonged so you can top off with Premium unleaded to get a nice mix somewhere in the middle. If you're concerned you can get a bluetooth OBDII dongle and run an app like Torque for free to monitor your knock/kvr. Not sure you can monitor that sensor on Torque but you should be able to monitor the timing. Keep an eye on it under WOT especially when going uphill, towing, cold days or all of the above. Once you get a good feel you can experiment with a half a tank (this way you can top off with 91oct and get near 87oct again if need be) of 85 octane and make sure that the ECU isn't pulling timing. In this manner I was able to determine that my Optima runs fine on 85oct at this elevation even though the manual calls for 87oct (again, sea-level/altitude v 85/87 thing).
