I had a JK Wrangler (current generation) before. They are FUN, good all around trucks. Not the most reliable but it is one vehicle that does so many things, convertible, removable hard top or front targa only, 4x4, easy to park anywhere short wheelbase, can tow a small trailer.
ID get one if i were you, removing a roof on a whim, is a blast, very liberating. Very versatile vehicle. I only got a tacoma since i prefer to haul toys on a bed and not pull a trailer.

I think the biggest problem I have with the bed on my Tacoma is that it's only 5' long which is only big enough to haul something like a dead deer. Which is usually all I need it for anyway, 2 to 3 times a year. When I do need to actually haul something (mulch, trash, lawn tractor, limestone) I can't use my truck anyway. I'd buy a long bed but I do occasionally NEED to drive my truck to work in inclement weather, and a long bed is no good for a parking garage.

Small trailer is in my future regardless, just trying to figure out what'll be pulling it.

Bw s256 turbo with 3 in glass pack dumped pre axle raptor liner bed and top rails and fenderflares and rocker panels. Hunter side steps. Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
bed extender. problem solved much cheaper (and more reliable) than a jeep. just sayin.

Kraig, ill answer your question here, This was my old Baby, i miss em. Takes seconds to take off the front section hardtop, they fit behind the back seat. Instant open air freedom, Same thing for the Unlimited.
This was my second jeep, had a TJ before. I know i will get another JK again someday, but for now, i had to downsize to one vehicle that answered all the needs.
I had an 07, first year production, so it had lots of issues, air bag light, check engine light etc. All warranty type stuff, but all because of first year production. Thing is, Jeeps keep their value, just as much if not more than Tacomas. Infact, i sold my JK for $2k more than i bought it for, and i put 30k miles on it, serious! Also i actually sold it with airbag light on, the buyer didnt care.

I know and think the 2012 and newer jeeps with improved motors are better motors too. They have worked out the probs i think.

When I found my taco I was looking for a 2 door unlimited rubicon. I had big plans for that truck after having an 88 Sahara that was the absolute tits. I saw the tacoma on the lot and fell in love. Now that summer is coming, I would kill for a wrangler, but I still love the Toyoter.
Moral of the story...you will not go wrong with either, I can't wait to have both!

i like rubicons... if i didnt need my truck for being a truck i would have a 4 door rubi in a heart beat. Last week i helped my buddy lift his with a 2.5 inch budget boost then he threw some wheel spacers and 35's on it. It is awesome. (also commando green)

You could always take the money you'd need to trade up for the JKU and buy an old Jeep and keep your Tacoma.

I've driven a JKU Rubicon off road, and it is pretty capable but it feels much larger and disconnected compared to the older Jeeps, IMO. Buy an old YJ (square headlights are the coolest), drive it on sunny days with the top off, beat the piss out if it and when it breaks you always have your Tacoma.

Jeeps are waaaaay over priced IMO.

34K for a Wrangler. 50K for a nicely equipped loaded Cherokee.

at least overpriced Tacoma's have excellent resale value.

I refuse to pay money for Chrysler products because I need to be able to depend on my shit. I'm hard on it.

That said, if it's what you want and you just pavement pound with no need for towing or a bed, go for it. You're always in AAA range.

The bed is why I bought my taco. I had a '98 tj I loved but it got totalled by a woman not paying attention. Never had a problem with it. I've had Cherokees since then and they were all good vehicles. The only reason I didn't get another wrangler was I couldn't find a used one I liked for the right price. I love my truck but if Jeep made a 4 door wrangler truck that's probably what I would have. I don't regret my decision on buying my truck at all but having a truck that the top and doors came off of would be the bomb. Fwiw I still have my '98 Cherokee and it's still running strong with over 200,000 miles on it. I say go for it if you don't need a bed. I drove both before I decided to get the truck and have to say it wasn't a easy decision.

Its the first year with the v6 pentastar it may not be as good as the l6, could be better. My 96 cherokee has 240k on it still strong had a 89 with 260k still strong when I sold It, 2000 168k needed a rebuild and sold it for my 81 yota, and I trust the Yota way more than tht Jeep but if you know it will be gone a in a few years go grab the JEEP, again Tacomas are easy to find so if it doesnt work out you can go grab another.

Couldn't agree more. I drove two in the same day. I couldn't believe what giant "pieces of you know what" they were, and both had sticker prices higher than a Tacoma.

A Wrangler is about the only rental that can be moderately wheeled. I don't think a Taco SR5 with OEM Dunlops is going to do better on the trails.
