I have a PC now, but switching to a iMac in the next month or so. Is there anything that I'm going to need or know to make the transition seamless. I know pics and music are no problem. But I do have a lot of Excel and Word document that I use on a daily basis.

External HD or hi-cap thumb drive should be more than enough to get everything transferred from one machine to the next - drag & drop, as simple as that.

For the Office docs I would have a plan of what I want to use on the Mac. If it's Office 2011 for Mac then check compatibility with whatever version you have now and make sure there's no catches there. Or if you go with Office 365 you can start getting setup on that now for a seamless transition to the Mac. Alternatively you can move those docs to a service like Google Drive and see if that works for you. Again, do that now so you are all set when it comes time to switch.

You also can run Window on a Mac( Parallel Desktop 8, VMware Fusion 4)if you're not comfortable with iMac(user-friendly). Nothing to worry about iMac,straight - forward ,kindergarten , elementary, stuff. You be fine...

I've used friends Macs before. That's the reason for the switch. Just wanted to make sure that my documents will transfer. Sounds like installing Office will be a good idea.

Apple's Pages (Word Processor) and Numbers (Spreadsheet) do a pretty darn good job of handling Word & Excel files as well. Also a heck of lot cheaper than Microsoft's applications, and a real pleasure to use on a Mac.

I have both (Apple's & Microsoft's apps) installed on my Mac, but use Pages/Numbers almost exclusively. About the only exception is when I forgetfully double-click on a document in the Finder and it takes me to a Microsoft app instead of the Apple app I prefer. Need to get around to changing the default apps for these documents (or uninstall Office so the Apple apps take over these documents).

You can, I think we call it "migration" MacBook don't die easily, unless you've abused it. I'm still using my 2009' MacBook Pro. All you need is upgrade the memory if you do alot of Photoshop stuffs, if just for surfin' the net, check emai, iTunes, you're good to go....

A time machine backup from any version of Mac OS should probably work with any other version of Mac OS that supports time machine. Worst case, all of your files are just sitting there and can be copied over. Not as convenient, but your files will still be accessible.

That's a sweet deal...I wish I know about this early, sorry . Have you tried to press and hold the Option key immediately after hearing the Mac startup chime. Continuing to hold this button down will bring up a menu where you can select drive to boot from. Use the keyboard arrows to choose your boot device, then press the Enter key. The computer will start up from the chosen volume, but bear in mind performance will likely be much slower than when you normally operate your Mac.

I just switched to a MacBook Pro Retina from a PC (my boss would not buy me another PC) and I have been trying to setup windows 7 on my MacBook through Parallels. I got this genus idea to download windows 7 iso file off some website because my employer's windows download only downloaded in exe and the iso conversion of that isn't working. Now every time I use my MacBook, the windows 7 iso file from the website keeps showing up in my downloads folder and is apparently running. When I delete the files, the files will not delete sometimes saying it is being used and if I can delete it, the files come back the next time I turn on the computer. HELP! My distaste for macs is growing stronger. Thanks.

Edit: I guess it went away

Yea. I have tried everything. Even took it into the local apple place and they couldnt boot either by network, usb drive or superdrive/external drive.
They suspect the vid card, just dont want to risk paying that kind of money for one and that not be it.

Ok Apple Nerd, this one has got me stuck. I have a bunch of DTS "DVD Audio" albums that I'd like to rip to iTunes. So far I can't do it with iTunes or Digiarty MacX DVD Ripper Pro. Any idea how to convert them to AAC/MP3, etc?
