Bob Stoops: The SEC gap isn’t as wide as perceived

    It's wider than perceived. :p

It’s May, and the SEC bias train is continually rolling to where it will hit hyper or warp speed come August. January’s championship and February’s signing day only silenced the deafening noise for a short time.

One of the SEC’s most spectacular performances in January came not only when Alabama throttled Notre Dame on the country’s biggest stage, but also when Texas A&M electrified Jerry World with a 41-13 romp over Big Game Bob and his Sooners.

While on a Sooner Caravan stop in Tulsa, Stoops eluded to fans that the ever-widening gap of the SEC and everybody else is really just a myth that trumps reality, via Tulsa World. After all, the SEC is made out of a house of cards, right?

“Well, it depends on what gap you’re talking about,” Stoops said. “What are the bottom six doing?”

Stoops was quick to point out the SEC’s ‘bottom feeders’ in an attempt to take a shot at the strength of the conference from top to bottom, which is a fair argument.

“So they’ve had the best team in college football,” Stoops said. “They haven’t had the whole conference. Because, again, half of ‘em haven’t done much at all. I’m just asking you. You tell me.

“It depends on who you want to listen to,” Stoops said. “Listen, they’ve had the best team in college football, meaning they’ve won the national championship. That doesn’t mean everything else is always the best.

“So you’re listening to a lot of propaganda that gets fed out to you,” he said. “You’re more than smart enough to figure it out. Again, you can look at the top two, three, four, five, six teams, and you can look at the bottom six, seven, eight, whatever they are. How well are they all doing?

“What’d we (the Big 12) have, eight of 10 teams in bowl games this year? Again, you figure it all out.”

Stoops failed to mention the way his team folded against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl after reeling off five straight wins, nor did he mention Notre Dame throttling him at home 30-13, after which they turned right around and looked like a high school team against Alabama.

To be this dominant in a time of so much parity around college football is truly impressive. It takes luck, and it takes playing your best game on the nation’s biggest stage.

But that’s something Oklahoma and Stoops just can’t seem to figure out how to do.

This is just another entertaining attempt to point out the SEC is overrated.

I must have missed how his conference had 6 of the top 10 ranked teams in the nation for the majority of the year.

"Big Game Bob" should STFU and pay more attention to trying not to fall short of expectations every year.

Dude is jealous. Kansas and Texas and Texas Tech were a joke last year. Texas, which has been a staple in that conference has fallen off the radar of most schools as being a competitor. So he wants to examine the SEC's bottom 6, and we're over hear like, "Yeah, but look at your 'Heavy Hitters' all disappearing and shit.

No doubt... Some of my friends who are ACC fans are talking a bunch of shit to say the least... So, these dumbasses exist in every conference. Well, almost anyway...

In all reality though, I feel that the SEC is getting weaker. Not sure if its from talent distribution or Bama is just sucking up all the talent.

Whoa nelly, ya'll are getting a lot talent but I think the SEC is just in a normal flux...there will always be the bottom feeders like Kentucky and Ole Piss. Auburn/UF/TN are probably going to rebound soon but I really hope they don't. Others will just hang somewhere in the middle like they always have been.

The Mississippi teams are both on the rise. Auburn and UT won't be down forever. The SEC isn't weaker, just more prone to beating themselves up.

I'm of the "Total Domination" mindset for primarily my team. But, I take up defense when people from outside the conference try to hack on the SEC. Auburn and Tennessee really need to get moving. I know we beat ourselves up, but I'm honestly to the point of, "schedule the Oregons, and the Louisville's" and let's take a year off of beating ourselves up and show 'em what its all about. Let's get Oregon to play 5-7 SEC's average teams, and see how well they deal with injury.

Might want to get your umbrella out because I think you just opened up a can...:D

It would be interesting to see if they could come out of that with less than 2 or 3 losses...

Im just being honest. Bigger, stronger, harder hitting athletes are in the SEC. Maybe not ALL of them, but most. I thought that was common knowledge. I would say it is rare to see a running back as small as Oregon usually has, make it all season through the SEC. Crapstorm all it wants...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Right now, its just time for the SEC. At some point in time it will change. Big 12 will be back, unless they all end up in the SEC. PAC will become dominant again. Too many changes in coaches and teams from conference to conference to predict it.

Ole Miss has/had a small squirt of a running back. MSU's Ladarius Perkins is barely 190. We've got another running back/wide receiver who is barely 180. Our fullback is roughly 230. Smaller running backs can do it.

Never heard of em.....that's what I'm saying. But, they practice day in, and day out with SEC players. Oregon doesn't. On top of that we're only speaking about one position. Consider the O-line and D-line differences. After a few weeks of GA, vanderbilt, Bama, kentucky, SC, Florida, LSU, back to back to back, and sprinkle in some out of conference teams, all these teams that aren't in the SEC that are talkin smack, wouldnt.

:facepalm:Georgia almost beat the The Tide last season........and the last time we played Bama "we" won. I'd say it's the other way around......"some" of the other SEC schools are catching up with Bama. But as you mentioned, the old powerhouse schools have definetly dropped....Tenn. & Florida. ;)
