Actually, conventional motor oil comes from many types of decayed biological material, primarily ferns and other plants. That is the undoing of the fallacy that we will run out of oil. As long as plants are on the planet, it will always produce oil.

Indeed. But the big question is...are we using it faster than nature can replenish it?

I see some of you are using Shell Rotella T6. I used that in my mazda as it was recommended to help with burning oil in the turbo and it was an awesome oil. My question is this. Is it a recommended oil/viscosity that will work in the Tacoma?

Works great in mine. Way better than mobil 1 or royal purple (I wouldn't run either if they were free). Only other oil on par with T6 is amsoil or german castrol IMHO.

Good deal. I shall start using it in the Yota then as I have plently left from when I had my mazda. I know the tests done on the Rotella always came back much better than Mobil 1 or any other " quality " oils.

Yeah, my oil analysis from the subaru always came back great with the T6 and Amsoil, much better than anything else I tried (although I never ran GC).

Oil analysis will be better for some oils vs others for different cars. Each manufactures engine seems to prefer one brand over another. I've read on bob's the oil guy site. I guarantee Royal Purple is as good as Amsoil. I've sold Amsoil and tried both. They both are great. German Castrol is always a good choice too. Rotella always has a big following.

I caved into the Rotella T6 hype over on ThumperTalk.com and put it in my Suzuki DR-650SE. Before using that oil my bike's clutch and tranny were butter-smooth and shifts were effortless. Once I put the Rotella in it (it is a motorcycle-compatible oil with the MA rating) the bike's tranny immediately became clunky when shifting. I dumped that oil within 15 miles of use. Several thousand miles and numerous oil changes later it STILL is clunky - better, but clunky. I will never use Rotella again. I'm paranoid that somehow Rotella's additive package altered the surface of my clutch plates (easily fixable) and/or eroded the hardening on my tranny gears (not so easy to fix). I know my dual sport bike is a completely different animal from the Tacoma, but due to my crappy experience with Rotella T6 I will not even think of ever using it in the truck. Besides, isn't its additive package specifically designed for massive diesel engines and all of the contaminates those engines pass into their oil? A 4.0L, normally-aspirated gas engine is far from that.

Like Stroked383z said, every application is different. I don't see why you would have an issue if others are running t6 in their bikes (assuming that's what that forum was saying) and they didn't have any issues. I don't know bikes, but I do know cars. Oil analysis on both my mustang and my sti have shown that T6 is an excellent oil for them. The sti is of course a turbo car, but the mustang is N/A. As far as it being designed as a diesel oil, I believe that is true. However the only thing I've really noticed is that my zinc levels are higher.
Run what you're comfortable with. In all reality you could run supertech in your tacoma and as long as you were diligent about changing the oil you would be fine.

What about TOTAL engine oil? I never used it but I plan to, on my next oil change.

Only the 5w40 synthetic and 15w40 Type-II (conventional) products.

"Rotella" is simply Shell's trade name for their higher end oil products. They used to have a full line available nationally... Dad always used Shell "Fire and Ice" 10w40 in the old Buicks.

Also, different weights and grades of Rotella are available in different regions. 0w20 products are offered in Canada.

    WTF is that?

Never heard of it... definitely wouldn't be the first on my block to run it.
There's a lot of crap out there sold as "better" or "environmentally friendly" when in reality, they are simply OEM'd from another manufacturers who offered the lowest bid.
