I'd go with the Auto. Manual guys are always complaining about some TSB squeaky something...and gas mileage is supposed to be slightly better with the auto...

^^^ seems like you'd have more usable cab room if you go auto as well but i'm not sure how the reg cab is setup so don't know for sure.

Ya there's 3 seats in manual but can't shift with the shifter in someone's crotch and the auto has bucket seats with a middle thingy that opens for storage but does it matter for lifting auto or manual?

I was torn too... I ended up going with the auto, pretty much because it comes with a nicer interior. It has bucket seats and a center console, versus a bench seat in the 5 spd model.
I didn't believe the sales guy when he told me the auto actually gets better mpg than the stick- but I believe it now. If I had the manual I'd be in 2nd or 3rd gear all the time for climbing hills, passing cars, etc. With the auto it just chugs along in 4th gear, seems like it hardly downshifts.
With cars, the stick shift can feel really sporty and be a lot of fun... but I feel like with trucks (at least the ones Ive driven) a lot of times the shifting is kind of clunky, the clutch feels weird or something and it feels like your driving a tractor.

if you want comfortable seats get the auto, i would never buy another with the bench, it sucks.

I have the manual, and that's what I prefer. You having never driven one before should probably go automatic. If you are still unsure, I'd find a relative or friend who has a manual equipped vehicle and is willing to show you the basics before you just go blindly buy one. It is very different from driving an automatic, and you'll likely hate it without some practice before hand.

Manual gives you more control over a vehicle, but requires more work on your part to operate. I prefer them simply because it is all I've ever driven or owned. Many people seem to prefer autos or get tired of manuals after buying them. While I'd love to tell you to get the manual, It would be a disservice to you to not recommend some practice beforehand to make sure it is right for you. The tradeoff is worth it to some, more effort for more control, but for most it seems to not be worthwhile to them.

thats what I would prefer in a 4cyl. the 2.7 with 5 speed has been around for along time zero problems. more control better use of the power.

If your planning on lifting and running big tires the manual MIGHT make it feel like you have a little more power. 2.7 Tacomas are already pretty slow, adding a lift and bigger tires is going to make it even worse. The 5 spd might help offset that power loss a little bit.

You should learn to drive a stick before you decide. I'm sure you mist know someone who has a stick honda civic or a vw or something, have them show you. It's way easier to learn on a smooth shifting car than it is on a truck. Like someone else said, if you just buy the 5 spd truck without knowing how to drive it already you will probably hate it.

depends on whos crotch your stick is in whether it would be good or not. ;)

I've never driven a 2.7 5 speed, but the 4.0 6 speed has been good so far.

the 4cyl is better with the stick. my reg with 4.10s is not slow at all.

I can drive with two girls next to me.

that being said the bench sucks, its so retarded they dont allow buckets with manual
