Check out these build threads on 5th gens before you just start making assumptions

You just helped me prove what I'm saying. Looking quickly at the threads they had to dump more money into their rigs to get them set up, which is what I'm saying... Toyota isn't producing trail-ready equipment off the showroom floor. I'm not saying 4runners are better/worse that Tacos, I'm simply pointing out the fact that Toyota is designing and marketing to soccer moms. I'm also not saying any Yotas are worthless, but they are in no way as rugged as they used to be. Hell, the TRD Taco is barely a step above the base model for a ton more money and still needs a full suspension and armor to make it trail-able.

But that's neither here nor there. The 2014 4Runner is friggin ugly.

Did you not see where a stock Trail did the Rubicon trail with only sliders and MT's? Maybe Toyota has wussified the Tacoma but if you look at the 5 generations of 4Runner's the 5th gen has Toyota returning it to it's offroad roots while similar vehicles such as the Pathfinder and Explorer are turning into crossovers. Soccer moms buy Highlanders

How many people into serious wheeling leave their rigs stock anyways?

DING DING DING DING We have a winner!

Older trucks are cheaper to modify because more parts are readily available. Plus people are more likely to bash up a $4500 truck than a $45,000 one.

I find that very hard to believe with all of the body work which is going to get smashed to hell (particularly the ugly front end which offers a very poor approach angle) and all of the added electronic gizmos and gadgets (the more complicated a system the more that goes wrong with it) Toyota is very serious about returning the 4Runner to the trail. They've got the FJ for that. The least they could've done was adopt a front end like the Taco so the bumper could be easily replaced with aftermarket without cutting. One of the only good things I can see that they did was make 4wd or an AWD variant in every version. Unfortunately it would appear they've done away with the manual tranny :(

I'm really not trying to pick on the Runner, If I could have found a Gen II/III in my area that wasn't rusted to hell or under 250k miles I'd be driving it. All that extra space to keep your shit dry is pretty sweet.

Huh? Blonde moment. Sorry. That quote references "quick fixes", like holding a fender on with zip ties and duct tape.

This is bull shit. In my opinion trail 4 runner has proven itself as the most trail ready rig from toyota off the show room floor. Not only did rubicon prove this, they also ran the Baja in a stock trail....

    Wow. Relax.

What you've shown me is a video of Toyota racing a "heavily" modified rig. Great. Grand. Swell. Looks like fun. Call me when they sell you that rig off the showroom floor. The other videos show me the capability of a brandy new rig, smelling like factory.

Please remember that they've produced a rig full of more electronic systems which WILL fuck up on the trail and ultimately leave you stranded. My first point still remains, the 2014 is ugly. My second point also remains. A very large part of trail riding is dependability, and most rigs are going to perform the way should for a few years after purchase. After that? Sensor wires come loose/get cut, electronics fail, etc. I understand that fact driving a 2011 Taco, we're all in the same boat. The fact remains, the more ridiculous systems you put in a vehicle the more to fail.

As I eluded to earlier, if Toyota was really marketing the newer 4 Runner to the offroad enthusiast they would simplify/reduce the systems, use more robust components, redesign the body for armor/mods (maybe even offer armor?) and reduce/eliminate drive by wire.

How many of you have swamped an older vehicle? Leave the engine running, jump out, and hook up. Then you get home and drain the milkshake out of your diffs, drive to work on Monday. Are you going to try that in a vehicle full of electronics? Again, I too am in the same boat, and wish Toyota had not wasted the time and money over-engineering my truck.

Well agree to disagree. If you watched the videos, truck is stock trail suspension, engine, tranny, etc with added lights and chromoly safety tubing to even qualify for safety. Until you throw down and get one and drive it yourself off road you can keep talking shit about it.

No off the shelf vehicle is really geared towards off roading then since they all have electronic gadgets. There's probably not a huge business case for a bare bones hardcore off road ready no electronics vehicle. Someone who wants that has plenty of old vehicles they can get and fix up. More logical to take vehicles that have a broader appeal and throw in some lockers and skids and a coupe other things for those who may want to use them off road.

Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
That DOES look good, however, looks like it only has 2" of up-travel?
