Thanks, Desert Drifter! It does help...

I'm now leaning towards a nice dual band handheld to start with.

It won't hurt the repeater but it is annoying to others because of the noise it generates, it is audible. A little "int" shows up on the display if it's on. Have a look at echolink it is a free program to any licensed ham. If a local repeater has echolink you can access thousands of users all over the world. This is also some thing you can set up at home as long as you have internet access. We have echolink access on our repeater in Conway NH. the repeater's call is W1MWV and is accessed through KB1EZJ-R. There is even an app for echolink I have used my tablet in Canada to link to the NH repeater good fun.

Passed the tech exam today. :) Going to study for General and maybe extra, because I'm fascinated with the prospect of long distance communication while mobile.

I have my D710a hooked up to a Garmin Map60Cx to run APRS.

I am having a bit if RF interference when I turn in my Rigid Industry Duallys when running on 2m.

    Suggestions?

Are the 12v and ground wires to the Dually's running near the radio or the antenna cables?

OK now I know. If it has a power supply of some sort (driver) and it sounds like those lights are pretty fancy it most likely is a switching supply. They are electrically noisy. You can try a ferrate choke the easiest are a snap on one (has a little clip that allows you to open it). Wrap as many turns of the supply wire to the lights as you can and as close to the lights as you can around the choke and close the choke back together. Radio Shack has these things they may not know they have them but they do just look at the little drawers till you see something about chokes.

Anyone use any apps (iPhone) pertaining to ham? Liiike a repeater directory, some sort of bible for its use or the ability to speak on the radio through the app. Am looking at RFinder Worldwide right now for $10.

I use "Scanner Radio" for Android. Streams from broadcastify.com. Check out Echolink.org for using the computer or smartphone to access linked repeaters.

Right on, thanks! Was listening to folks on the radio talk about echolink. Will check out scanner radio, too.

I have used the echolink app for iPhone. It works great. When traveling, you can always get back to your home repeater if equipped

Got RFinder and finally hooked up Echolink. Man, this ham stuff is serious!

Used Chrips and that usb cable to program the 8900. Jeez, that made it simple! Worst hangup was half the radio couldn't scan, the other was stuck on one station, couldn't flip back and forth between main radios, etc. Turned out I still had one end of the wire attached to the radio and it stopped everything from working correctly. Crazy.

Looks like RadioReference is the source list of every frequency, huh? Was hoping to tap into LAPD and such. M'eh.

You can but not through your ham radio. (I'm making an assumption that LAPD is using trunked communication.) You would need a scanner like this Uniden Bearcat Digital Scanner.

Or you can use the app on your phone to stream the audio. Like this:
