Is there any cheap alternatives to Dynamat. I checked the audio thread some guys use stuff (roofing seal) from Homedepot/Lowes but others say not to due to smell

my drivers side headlight starting to fog up, so i hit it with a heat gun and got all the fog off, only to pick it up after and hear water sloshing around inside it... fuck. so i put it in the oven for a bit to get all the water to evaporate. thought it was all out. took some silicone and resealed it. put it back on my truck, get to work, and the fucking thing is fogged right up again. anywone know how to fix this or have a set of headlights for a 2nd gen kicking around?

I would like to know also. I would like to sound deaden some areas in my truck but it is goddamn expensive. I know there is a few other products that are similar and cheaper but i forget what they are called. This post on another forum is pretty infomative

You really need to be talking apples to apples here. Brown Bread was made by B-Quiet, and is no longer available, and hasn't been for years. It has been replaced by B-Quiet Ultimate which has a higher butyl content. That means Brown Bread was part butyl and part asphalt, as is Ultimate.

Dynamat Extreme is totally butyl based, which means it is rubber, and has no asphalt. The other types of this product that are not butyl based are asphalt based, which means you might as well use roofing products.

Butyl based products are going to be more expensive than asphalt based products, and are going to be more heat resistant than asphalt based products or any combination of butyl and asphalt.

Closed cell and open cell has nothing to do with sound deadening or insulation, it refers to foam, like polyurethane, neoprene, and any other types of foamed products like PVC.

While any foam will demonstrate some tendencies to have sound deadening or insulating properties, it would not be superior to 100% butyl based products.

BTW, Shawn..........thanks for opening up this can of worms. There are Republicans , Democrats, and Independents, all of whom will tell you their ideas are superior. This topic has butyl proponents, butyl-asphalt proponents, and asphalt proponents, all of whom will tell you that their products are superior.

The other proponents are those of the Lizard Skin type products and people who will tell you that Lizard Skin can be made at home for a fraction of the cost.

Check out this thread: alternative to Lizard Skin Let's see if you can read this thread all the way through.

    Heres the thread http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/lets-discuss-dynamat-alternatives-219804.html

This guy has a good list of the majority of the sound deadeners on the market

There is a lot of good info on here, but not much in the way of actual results. So here is the products that I have ran Dynamat Original, Dynamat extreme, Edead, Fatmat, Fatmat Xtreame, Fatmat Rattle trap XXX, Zilla mat, B-Quite, hushmat, and now Second Skin.

Dynamat original is good but you have to it to get it to stick, but once in place it is good to go. I would not use this on roofs, or trunk lids, or doors, just on you floors. No mess at all with this stuff.

Dynamat Extreme works great can be installed any temp sticks great. This stuff can be messy while installing, and will cut you up pretty good since the metal backing is so thin.

Edead do not recommend this stuff is asphalt needs to be heated up to stick, and falls when it gets above 100 degrees outside. This stuff can be messy while installing. This stuff can be messy while installing.

Fatmat do not recommend this stuff is asphalt needs to be heated up to stick, and falls when it gets above 100 degrees outside. This stuff can be messy while installing. This stuff can be messy while installing. This is the same stuff as Edead, maybe a little bit better quality in the foil, but that is it.

Fatmat rattletrap XXX is ok but still do not recommend this. You will have to heat this up to get it to stick good, as it is half butyl and half asphalt. But, it holds up in 100 degree temp outside. But if it is above 100 degrees outside for long periods like 12 hours in the sun, it will start to sag in places. This stuff can be messy while installing.

Fatmat Mega Mat works great can be installed in any temp. Sticks like a SOB. It is almost impossible to get it off when it is stuck to metal, and forget it if you stick it to its self.

Zilla mat do not recommend this stuff is asphalt needs to be heated up to stick, and falls when it gets above 100 degrees outside. This stuff can be messy while installing. This stuff can be messy while installing. This is the same stuff as Edead, someone told me that is the same company just a different name used on packaging.

B-Quite is ok but still do not recommend this. It is almost the exact same thing as Fatmat rattletrap XXX. You will have to heat this up to get it to stick good, as it is half butyl and half asphalt. But, it holds up in 100 degree temp outside. But if it is above 100 degrees outside for long periods like 12 hours in the sun, it will start to sag in places. This stuff can be messy while installing.

Hushmat is good can be applied at any temp. Unlike most companies that bounce the sound back at you and can help gain you DBs on the microphone. This one does not increase your sound it actually absorbs sound. This stuff can be messy while installing.

Second Skin works great and can be installed at any temp. This stuff sticks just as good as, if not better then the Fatmat extreme. The nice thing about this stuff is that it has easy clean up and no mess left behind. Plus it is thicker than any of the other mats that I have mentioned. In comparison to Dynamat it is about 1.5 times thicker, so 2 layers of this is like 3 layers of Dynamat.

IMO, I would have to say that Second Skin takes the cake when it comes to sound damping material, for all bang for your dollar. I would have to say that Fatmat Mega Mat is in close second, with Dynamat Extreme tied for second, and in forth would be Dynamat original but only if used on floors. As for the rest mentioned please don’t waste your money to save a buck or two. Spend a little more and get something that works good the first time around. I know that there is a few that have not been mentioned, but I have not personally tried them. Right now I will only be using Second Skin in all future installs, as well as cars I do for someone else. I am tired of helping someone put in cheap product and to have them come back a month later saying I did something wrong, because it is now sagging down.

Sounds like the downsides to that are it can smell, you need heat to apply it. If it gets to hot it can peel and fall off. For the price it might be worth a shot. To dynamat your whole truck your probably looking at $500+. DAMMIT stop making look at audio stuff! Giving me ideas and high end audio is noottt cheap. Considering upgrading speakers and sound deadening :anonymous: i love a good sound system.

Sorry . You have the gift cards to use I was just helping. I am not the high end, just thinking that if it is open to install speakers why not try to deaden noise. There is no way I am spending that kind of money for Dynamat.

Thats a good idea, it really improves the sound. Especially at low volume when the music doesnt drown out road noise. I wasnt planning on going to crazy with my sound system but it is addicting. I think dynamat for just doors would be $100

Interesting. Roofers always smell bad anyway so they probably wouldnt notice. If it is like other grace products like the ice an water, if it is warm out it is reaallyyy sticky. If you fold it and it sticks to itself you might as well throw it away. If it is colder out, like even 40, it doesnt stick well at all. I have actually fallen off a small roof because it was cold out and the ice and water didnt stick. I surfed it all the way down lol

Do you think if it was stuck/installed during the heat of summer it would stay stuck once it gets colder out
