Yeah, thanks! I'm really looking forward to it.

As for those bolt, you think those are beadlocks? That was I originally though, but when I looked closer it seems like the bolts are too far towards the inside of the rim? I can't imagine the bead goes that far down? But I know nothing about military vehicles.

They're a double bead lock split rim design. Pretty much necessary to get the runflat in and out of the fuckers (they have almost no give). The rim has a front half and the back half, all held together with those bolts and a giant o-ring pressed between the two halves.

It's not a true bead lock system like we would use on our trucks.

Bro, we're the Army. Until the DOT gets bigger and better guns than we have we won't pay tolls, get license plates, or otherwise give a damn.

That's what I was wondering. I know a lot of the Army's shit wouldn't pass the same inspections normal road-going vehicles would but was wondering if that style wheel is legal for us civilian folk.

That would have to be researched, but I doubt it. That tire/wheel combo truly is only good off road. They weigh a shit-ton and don't balance well at all. Edit: Although, I did just see an old 2 1/2 ton for sale which had the newer split rim wheels installed that did have a NH plate (and I assume inspection sticker). That truck should have had the old split ring wheel (the one that explodes and kills people when improperly reassembled), and maybe the owner was using the newer style to make it legal?

We also don't play by the air brake rules either :D

Military tactical vehicles are exempt from DOT and EPA regulation. Many parts are the same as those found on civilian vehicles, but others are specialty items for military use only. A great example is the M151, which replaced the M38A1 military Jeep and was a precursor design to the HMMWV. The suspension and steering system were (at some point) determined to not comply with DOT standards for use on public roads. When I was looking at them in the surplus system in the 1980s, you had to buy them in lots of ten and destroy the suspension system (lots of cutting torch work) before they could be removed from the sales lot. Those HMMWV rims are a royal pain to work with. The idea is to make tire (and run-flat internals) replacement possible in the field with hand tools. Not at all fun.

You know exactly what I'm talking about. I used to drive over the deflated tire with a 5-ton to break the bead off the rim, then start the disassembly process. But, they were better than replacing 5-ton tires!

Remember how the mechanics were like "that's an operator level task"?

Not true. My launcher doesn't even have a locking diff. Friggin' thing will get stuck just looking at mud.

You bet. I also remember how pissed-off they were when I demanded that they provide a hands-on demonstration and training so that we could perform that hopeless task. I never heard it again.

That was a good idea. At the time I was lower-enlisted, so I just got it done.
