Here is how my set up looks. Eric and ANB Custom Fabrication made the bolt together rack, then I threw my Yakima Rail Grabbers on it.

Its a padded pvc pipe the lenght of the roof. I put it as close to the brake light. Never rolls out of place.

You can also get Foam Blocks. I have a set that I used for my old Ford Fusion (a 16' canoe on a Fusion is quite a site). I think I'm just going to see how they work at first.

Here's a shot with my canoe on my shell...The rack came with the shell. It's a Yakima system. I just use the 2 tie down points on the rack. I have meant to get a long enough strap to tie the leading edge of the canoe to the front tow hooks but I never seem to remember. Probably driven 3,500 total miles with the boat like that and never had an issue....

You're better off using a strong cord or rope up front. Those flat straps can get excited from the wind.

The Harbor Freight website has one listed for $69.99. I'm tempted to pick one up.

That should work for me, i was concerned about all the air coming up underneath the canoe at highway speeds would lift it off the truck.I guess if its worked for you and you didn't lose your canoe or it didn't lift your shell off i should be ok. I also looked at securing the canoe to the front but what about the paint on the front bonnet, i think the rope/cord would rub on the paint.

    THKS
    for the pic

They make straps that come out from under your hood, so they don't cause any damage. I have a set on my Jeep Liberty for when I put my canoe on that vehicle.

I want to have that guy "eddie209" make me a shell. without the cover it looks like a nice rugged rack.
OP if you are worried about marring up the roof of your truck, since each one is made to order ask if he can make a ladder style rack for ya.

another option would be those temporary board strap racks. it has a padding in between whatever your carrying and the roof.

Just have to make sure you get your straps around the mounting towers when you secure your boat to the cross bars. It will slide around if you don't...(don't ask me how I know ). Never had an issue with the canoe lifting. The grey item under the handle at the front of the boat is a pad that is used to pad the boat as it sits on the rack. I use an extra to keep the boat from rubbing the paint on the roof of my truck. Without it, the boat can slap around a bit on rough roads....
