I'm noticing slight detonation now that the temps here are around 100+.
Does anyone think going one step colder on the plugs would help?
    I have an '05 4.0 and I'm running 91 octane from QT.

No....Colder plugs wont help. FWIW, There was an issue with the fuel delivered to QT, and some of the 91 oct. tanks had 89. all should be good now. Run another tank, and see if it still happens. FWIW, QT is some of the best fuel out here, other than this one screw up.

Thanks for the heads up on the gas Chris. I'll run this tank down and reload.

    Chris,
I ran the tank down to about 20 miles after the light came on. I filled it up with 91 Shell and the detonation got worse!

I've only had the truck for about four months and didn't know when the previous owner last changed spark plugs so I gave that a try to see if it would help. Well the plugs had never been changed! 71K on the original plugs. The Denso's all came out at around .048 gap and the NGK's were at .050-.051. Put new Denso's back in and it purrs like a kitty. It didn't get rid of the pinging though.

I filled up with 91 from QT today and after a few miles all seems good.

PS. Your plug write up made the job very easy, thanks.
