Samsung Galaxy S4 - Poor battery life, any suggestions?

Already stated why I haven't yet, but being their flagship phone I shouldn't have to.

 

thats not true at all... if anything thats more the reason to root/flash a custom rom.

 

I was saying "their" meaning Samsung. Is it not their best phone? I'll complain to them tomorrow Oct the phone although I'm not sure if it will do anything

 

it is their best phone. and thats what im saying. rooting/flashing ROM's is always better on the best phones.

 

Roms are limited, especially to the AT&T version as their boot loader is locked and the backup isn't available yet.

 

thats what bootstraps are for. going to see what the att devs are going. Seems TWRP is still in experimental stage.

Well this thread is to help me with poor battery life with a stock phone, installing apps that kill other apps is kind of redundant don't you think, or am I being too picky? Idk I guess I expected better, I've switched between Android and Apple a few times but keep going back to Apple, never had problems with any iPhone I've owned and couldn't keep an android phone for longer than a month.

 

Get what phone makes you the happiest. Thats why we have choices!

What iOs has going for it is its designed for very certain hardware. So its a lot more optimized. Where as android needs to work on a variety of hardware.

But i have never seen a need for task killer apps. However i have friend with iphones who get horrendous battery life. I think what it comes down to is where you are and how you use the phone.

 

Yeah I feel you. I use my phone heavily, but I'm taking it easy on this one. I'll keep it until the next iPhone comes outi guess lol.

 

My old andriod would spontaneous open apps that I have closed previously. Does not happen as much with the new ones, but my atrix has a factory task killer.

I think mine allows my to permanently turn off apps I never use as well if I remember right.

 

Yeah the old iterations of android were the best at management. I remember my HTC Eris on 1.5

And yeah you can now disable some of installed apps. I don't often do that, i just remove them since i always root my phones.
Settings-Apps- then press on one and sometimes you get the disable option.

That's pretty good, but you prob left it in your pocket all day. I play hill climb racing, go on Facebook, send 75-100 texts and emails, receive just as many, stream music over Bluetooth during my 45 minute ride to and from work, use tapatalk all day, and edit pictures when I get bored on my iPhone, and I can easily count on a day and half, or more. You do all that with a droid, and you'd get an hour out of it.

 

Try download easy battery saver app in google play store. I played around with downloading battery apps and this one is the best one I have used so far. I downloaded Juice defender but I was having problems with my network disconnecting and not reconnecting properly. With Easy Battery Saver, you can customize what gets turned on and off without paying extra money to get the full features. So far my battery will last the whole day now without an extra charge. Its free so its worth a shot. BTW I have a galaxy s4 also and switched from an Iphone 4.

Once the Galaxy Nexus was rooted, that phone seemed to have better battery life. Might be true for other Samsung phones.

Custom kernels can help with battery life, as you can set different governors, undervolt and underclock. Task killers are unnecessary, and maybe actually be the cause of your poor battery life. If/when you root the phone, you can try different OOM settings to tell Android how to manage it's memory.

Other things to do for better battery life.

1 - Adjust screen brightness for the minimum comfortable level you can see it. You don't need 100% brightness if your in a dark room!

2. - Adjust your location settings. Google Maps might be automatically trying to report your location every so often, using GPS and data. Turn off "Report From This Device".

3. - Data:

a - Do you have apps trying to sync data every 5 minutes? (weather? facebook? gmail?) Set the interval of how these apps sync their information. Also, you could toggle data on/off when not in use.

b - Do you work in a poor service area? Use airplane mode if you're at work and aren't supposed to be on the phone. Your phone constantly looking for service in a poor area will drain battery fast.

c - Perhaps you could set your phone to use 3G instead of 4G if you're not in need of the high speed downloads. 4G is worse on battery than 3G.

d - Turn off Wi-Fi if not in use. If your phone is constantly looking for networks you don't plan on using, you're wasting battery.

I've been using Android since Froyo and have always had decent battery life.

This is my current battery stats as I type this: (HTC Rezound with Jellybean 4.2.2). I spent a good chunk of time yesterday texting, FB messenger, and gmail keeping up with TW and XDA while I was out. EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm using stock battery.

 

Unless you buy an Android device with "Nexus" somewhere in the name, it's going to have some sort of bloatware on it.

b: Service is excellent here in Houston, I don't / can't bring my phone to work throughout the day.

d: I use wifi at my home, does it still search for a wifi signal if it's connected to a network? The battery is terrible, I'm on wifi 80% of the time unless I get a call or text and I'm not at home.

 

1. Auto might be part of it. Some people like it, some don't.

D. Might depend on your Wi-Fi settings. Check settings such as "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep", "Avoid Poor Connections" and "Wi-Fi optimization"
