I want to paint my badges and was wondering if anyone has stripped the chrome off of them first. I have seen posts about brake fluid or oven cleaner or bleach. Has anyone done this if so please post up. I feel that if I completely remove the chrome that would result in the best paint adhesion.

Satoshi'd grill. blacked out badges. aftermarket sound system. De-chromed and color matched. OME 885s + Dakars with 3rd leaf removed. LR UCAs. Scs stealth 6 with 285 duratracs. BAMF sliders
I had good results by just scuffing them up, cleaning very well, use adhesion promoter first then prime then paint. I did it a year ago an have no chipping or peeling.

You don't need to strip them. It's all part of the plastic. Just use some red scotch brite pads to scuff up then an adhesion promoter followed by a good etching primer then follow it with paint.

These were done as described but with some patterned film too and gloss clear all from a gun.

They went on a members truck here. If you check out my ad page link in my sig you can see them on his truck. I don't want to clutter the OP's thread up with stuff.

My dad is a plastic model kit builder. He uses oven cleaner to remove old paint to prep for repainting. Not sure if it would remove the plating or not, but it's worth a try.

I'd be afraid to use chemicals to remove it, might soften up and mess up the plastic as others have mentioned.

Have access to a micro/sand/bead blaster? It could make quick work of surface prep.

I am currently experimenting with oven cleaner and other things. Just on the toyota that was on the tailgate which isn't going back on anyway. I'm probably going with the same red I did the strip on my grill with. But that red camo pattern looks pretty sick

a couple of years ago I took one of the badges I wasn't going to reuse and tried all kinds of stuff to strip the chrome. None of it worked.

Ya oven cleaner = really clean chrome. I have it soaking in industrial strength paint stripper doesn't seam to be touching it. The thought process was that it would speed it up so I wouldn't be driving with tape on the side of my truck. I think I may take them off spend the time prepping the right way and put them back in a different spot. Maybe higher on the door provided there are no marks where it came from.

    Thanks for the input guys.

You could also take them out for a nice dinner, have them drink just a little too much wine, take em back to your place and they might just strip themselves.. Lol

So how do you get the badges off of your truck? Also how do you install them back on?

You can use a heat gun to slowly heat them up being careful not to bubble paint and use some fishing line as a "saw" to cut the double side tape off the back. The line would run between the badge and panel. Then get some double sided tape to put the back on.

Like I said before, The chrome is almost part of the plastic. There is no stripping it. Just clean, prep, prime, paint, and clear if you want.
