I'd love to turbo the 2.7, just don't want the hassles or being the only one. Friend of mine has a 450whp focus and he's always dealing with issues since no one else does it. The main problem i'd have with it is the tuning since no one does anything with these ECU so i'd have to hire someone to try and crack it so we could change it, all while trying to keep the CEL's off so I can get it inspected. It sounds a lot easier in theory than in practice. Also trying to get the exhaust flange to build a turbo header from, a plate to block off the air valve which is right above the header which would be right in the way for a turbo header. Then someone to learn and build the engine and get it properly set up and get the custom pistons, rods and head gasket, someone to build the trans or swap it for a supra 6 speed, tap the oil drian for the turbo. Might need custom fuel rails for the injectors, swap a higher flowing fuel pump into the tank, run a pressure regulator. Then onto brakes so I can stop it, wider tires, flares or rolled fender so I can hook, tac bars to keep from wheel hoping, custom exaust.

Small things keep adding up, here's just a rough ass guess on cost https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2PursnrWKg_ckMyQWpBQlJHaXc/edit?usp=sharing

Most of that would still apply to a super charger if you want to have more than the 250 whp from the URD. Most of that could be done until the old one breaks like the trans and stuff, and I have no idea how much power the stock bottom end can take before you have a ventilated block, so I was spending first on the bottom before having that issue

Also that'd be for a high HP, built motor, not just a 300whp one, so you could get away with a smaller turbo and no pistons ect

My opinion is that our trucks (i.e., 2.7L 2wd trucks) aren't worth putting forced induction on for a multitude of reasons:
    • Adding any kind of forced induction is incredibly expensive. Seems that most of us are very "price sensitive" when it comes to mods which is probably the reason we drive base model trucks. Unless you don't mind putting another $5k into your truck, don't even think about forced induction.
    • Our trucks don't hook-up even with the piddly amount of power they come with because there's no weight in the back. Then there's also the issue of axle wrap, wheel hop, etc. If you can't get power to the ground, it's not really worth having unless you want to do burn-outs all day long.
    • Out truck's suspension is hardly made for performance and will never match that of a tuned car. Leaf springs are designed for hauling loads, not performance. If you plan on doing a 4-link system with coil-overs in front and rear, then maybe you'll get some decent suspension performance, but that's another couple thousand $$$. Bouncing your way through turns at high speeds doesn't sound like fun to me.
    • Our truck's have frames which make them pretty heavy compared to a car. So even if you manage 275 whp, a car with the same horsepower will likely eat your lunch.
    • Out truck's transmissions are geared for low-end torque, or so it seams. I'm guessing you'd have to start messing with the tranmission and gear ratios if you'd actually want to go fast. (Not to mention the crazy long throw of the shifter itself. Sure, short shift kits are available, but I've owned one and they aren't exactly smooth.)
    • If you do a dramatic increase in horsepower, you should probably think about how you're going to stop. I'm not sure if larger brakes would do any good, but it's something you should consider ($$$)
    • Unless you go with the Toyota super charger (which I don't think they make for our trucks any more?), you can kiss all warranties good bye.
The end result of adding a turbo or a super charger to a 2wd Taco would be an empty wallet and a truck that isn't fast in a straight line or on the track :( If you've got lots of money to burn, then go for it. But I personally think it's a better idea to invest in a fast car than try to turn a slow truck into something it's not.

My new wheels arrived today... I absolutely love 'em!

They have a 40 mm offset which is apparently the same as the stock steelie wheels. I was worried that they'd look "pushed-in" like the stock wheels do, but from what I can tell, they're nearly flush with the fenders. Perhaps the fact that their 8" wide makes a difference?

Whatever the reason, I'm now glad I didn't get a 30 or 35 mm wheel in the same size (19x8) as I would've probably been pokin' out of the fenders and tearing up my sidewalls on the fender lips. Heck, that could still be an issue as I don't have tires on the wheels yet... that's where my next pile-of-money is going to go
