There are still steel wear surfaces, but the filter itself catches anything large enough to damage the bearings.

Magnetic oil drain plugs are misleading. Yes, they do show residue... but that is from the pan... before the oil passes through the filter.

UOA tells how much iron is in the used oil and not trapped by the filter.

As a mechanic myself, along with my other mechanic friends, we have been referring to Fram filters as "the orange can of death" for years. Thanks for the pictures and info, way to spread the word.

Well just got 10q from AA of Pennzoil Platinum and 2 k&n filters for $44 after $20 rebate that deal is still on at Advanced Auto. I never used k&n oil filters lets hope they perform as advertised.

If you have the 2.7L engine you will like the K&N Filter. The filter uses a 1" socket to install and remove.

    Fixed that for you.

Never use any kind of tool to install a filter without using a torque wrench.
Even my wimpy hand can get 3/4 turn on a filter.

What is the recommended torque setting Rich?

    Seems easy enough to do.

    Bingo.

Someone posted the spec from Ford a few days ago. It's not much, but all I've ever read from Toyota is 1/2 to 1 turn beyond gasket contact.

I go with 1/2 turn. I've had my share of taking off stuck filters including my own and the oil changes I do for friends. Not fun... Especially in an old Honda CRV where the filter is tucked up above the CV axle...

regarding the magnetic drain plug comment....

if it catches metal filings in the pan vs the filter.... good enough.
it's better to capture the filings wherever they are.... and restrict filings from flowing/recirculating with the oil....

    that being said,
I cannibalized a defective computers hard drive, magnet
(you won't believe just how powerful/strong those little magnets are, until you actually put one in your hand)

I keep a hard drive magnet stuck to the top of my oil filter.... always....

Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.

Hard drive magnets are THE SHIT. Don't make the mistake of putting your fingers between two loose ones!
I have one mounted on: each diff plug, trans plug, transfer case plug, oil plug, oil filter, and radiator cap. Like Jeff says: if it catches even a little bit of errant metal (which it does, if you've ever inspected a magnetized plug), then why not do it??

Does anyone know if the 4 cyl oil filter (part # ends in ZZ1) can be used on a 6cyl TRD, who's oil filter part # ends in ZZ3? are they interchangeable?

They are interchangeable, but the normal way to go is to use the -3 on the 4 cylinder since it's a slightly taller filter.

Makes for easier removal with the exhaust and filter heat shield down there.

Well I failed... I was looking at my denso one and a Toyota one and was looking at the inside from the bottom and noticed both look similar. I get the denso ones for 3 bucks a pop.

Excellent research. Thanks for doing the work for us. I'll be locating a local vendor for the Toyota filters myself.
