Don't sweat it, I did it in 3 weeks (think they pushed it out to 7 now). Is that for EMT or are they still doing a basic curriculum?

    Mine was through the CG.

    Upside-only 3 weeks

Downside-only 8 hours of ride along time.

In 2 years I only ran 2 medevacs though so...yeah. Lack of clinical time definitely makes you think on your toes in real life.

Yeah we have a 6month program here in CO. Mostly career firefighters or people working for an EMS agency that are being paid to complete it. There are a hand full of people who just do it to get it over with but working while it is going on Is tough.

After two years as a volunteer firefighter, I gave up my career and am going to have a go at becoming a professional.

I start a five month training program on Monday. By the fall, I'll have my NFPA 1001 I and II and a whole pile of other certs and be ready to battle it out for a spot with a professional department. Nervous that I gave up a sure thing. Excited to start following through on a dream I've had for over 10 years.

It's worth it! Keep at it and don't give up. Work hard and don't be discouraged by hearing no. Eventually you will get it all right and get the yes and it is worth it in the end.

Just ordered a streamlite flashlight for my helmet. Just love spending part of my paycheck on things the department should be issuing. Oh well lol

My department will not "buy" you a personal flashlight. We can use our annual budget to get one though. I personally have a helmet light and I carry a box light if I need. But our box lights are small.

We have some decent box lights. I already have a right angle light on my jacket but wanted something that will be shining where my head is pointing. The one on my jacket kinda sways around when I am walking and when I am crawling it is facing the ground. I know most departments wont buy you personal flashlights, I just think it would be nice if they did :)

Although the township is almost 500 square miles, it is only home to about 1,500 people. We would respond to about 25 calls per year. Our average response time was about 20 minutes. There were no qualifications to join the department and recruitment is an ongoing issue. Four halls, seven trucks, not enough bunker gear, SCBA's, etc. for all members. The township where I volunteered had an extremely small operating budget. A reality faced by many very rural places.

I received in-house training to our operating guideline standards. From there, there was little to no opportunity for professional certification. To get hired in Ontario, thousands of people will write for only a handful of positions. In order to be competitive, people have way more than their NFPA 1001, the minimum standard here or five to seven years on with another department, along with basic medical, CPAT, etc.--many firefighters have trained and worked as advanced or critical care paramedics.

My experience and documented training will undoubtedly help. However, with a statistical chance of being hired in the neighbourhood of astronomical, a widely recognized, advanced and diverse set of certifications is required.
