Help me out here... do I wire up the garage for 50A or 20A? Looks like I got a 50A plug here only rated for 20A?

    Came with my hobart 210mvp...

I would definitely wire for 50a.

Why would you do that? Unless you are also going to use something else on that circuit that does require 50A that is completely unnecessary.

I personally would run a 20A breaker with 12GA wire to the receptacle. I certainly wouldn't waste my money going bigger than a 30A circuit with 10GA wire

I don't remember the derating factor for a welder with 30% duty cycle off the top of my head but I think it is .5-.55 which means you could even get away with a 15A circuit for that welder

I'm an electrician by the way

Simple answer. If your installing a 50A receptacle the wiring to that receptacle must be rated at the same 50A. You never know what the next guy will plug into it.

Telling someone to run 12 ga to a 50A receptacle its silly. Especially coming from an electrician!

That is false. The over current protection must be sufficient enough to protect the wiring and devices attached to it but nowhere in the NEC does it say that you can't put a 50A receptacle on a 20A circuit

Still silly espcially nowadays when conduit isnt as prevalent. If you size the conductor for the breaker instead of the receptacle theres no way to upgrade to the full amperage of the receptacle later on unless you wanna tear the wall open.

Saving $50 by half-assing the job just isnt worth it to most people at this stage of the game.

I know what the specs are, I have the same welder (without the MVP though) and I have a 30A circuit with #10 wire (which is technically overkill) and a NEMA 5-50R to plug it into and it is up to code and would pass inspection any day of the week

Building something to meet your requirements while saving money and following the code is hardly half assing the job. I said it earlier, if you need to plug something else in that is actually a 50A load than you do need to accommodate for that but most of us that run dedicated welder outlets don't waste the time or money

If you are positive you are never going to use that receptacle for anything else then run the minimum you need to power it. If you want it done right rate it all for 50A anr run whatever welder, plasma you want in the future and not have to redo the electrical again.

I use my receptacle for my welder (30A), my plasma (40A), my dads welder (50A) and backfeed my generator through it when the powers out. If I would have ran the minimum each time I added a new device I would have rewired the garage 3 times by now...no thanks.

I'll probably just run the 50A then and put a panel in the garage. Probably keep the lights on the panel they are already on.

My brother just sent this to me haha

"A welder friend lost a bet and had to fork over a bottle of booze. This is how he "gift wrapped" it."

Well my wife has been after me to build her a fire pit and i've been a little slow at work so i came up with this fire pit/grill. Looks nice on our patio and i think it will come in handy when we go camping. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

I used rustoleum high heat grill paint. Says no primer needed. I wasnt able to sand blast it but wire brused the hell out of it and wiped with thinner. Maybe it will hold up pretty well.
