Good GPS

Hey whats going on TW, Iam looking for a Good GPS can any of you guys recommend one.

To make long story short....I let my mom borrow my GPS. Some one broke in to her truck and stole it, so she gave me what I paid for it.
SO now I am in the market for another. Which brings me to my question for you...Is Traffic updates worth the extra $$$? I am debating wheather or not I should get the Garmin Nuvi 255wt or the 265wt. The 265 has the traffic updateing. BTW the the updates or free.

 

I love my Garmin Nuvi.

 

I love my Pioneer AVIC-Z1 (converted to Z3)

 

I have a Magelan 1412....Doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles but it's a solid GPS with text to speech.

 

I owned a tomtom one but in the winter it refuses to stick to my windshield (the heating and cooling with the defrost makes the suction not work) This resulted in my wanting to throw it out the window every 5 seconds when it fell off. My new garmin nuvi (the tomtom broke when I threw it out the window) has a different suction cup. It has a lever attached to it and has never fallen off yet.
As for software. the tomtom has many more options as far as customizing your screen goes. you can choose what you want to viez below the map (like arival time vs time left, or miles till destination, speed, satelite coverage, compass) My garmin does not have thos options but I;ll live with it. I like garmins way to input your destination however. Also EVERYTIME I tried to use my tomtom in downtown pittsburgh (I asume any downtown of any major city will be the same) It had a siezure. It would think I was on the next street over and start recalculating my route. It would do this every couple seconds. If I was going to have to use it in the city I would have to program it outside the city and memorize my route through town. My garmin did not do that. It seems to recognize within a few yards of where you are instead of withing 30 feet. Hope this helped. Also i paid 110 for my garmin

 

I also really like my Garmin Nuvi. I ordered a vehicle spacific dash mount for it from "ProFit.com" No winshield or friction mount. Makes it very nice and easy to remove when leaving my Tacoma. The mount is permanent and I just pop off the Garmin. It's a nice set up.

 

Id go garmin. Mattering on what you want, anything from the 260W and up will be amazing. I have the 200w and the only thing i wish it said were the names of the streets outloud. Instead it just says "Turn left in .01 miles...... turn left now" sort of thing. I got used to it, so it works.. but the 260w says everything. Its awesome

 

For the price and features, I like the Garmin Nuvi 265wt.

+1 billion. I got one of these just the other day. I LOVE it. Works great...Easy to use.

It has bluetooth and automatic traffic updating built in. 4.3 inch screen. And it mounts great up in the high left corner of my window.

I've gotta order an extra power cable- It's a hardwire converter for the mini USB plug....but @ 15 bucks...I'm ok with that.

 

garmin street pilot models are cheap and work really well.

 

I'd like to get one with a larger screen, voice directions and the lane assist option. Any ideas which ones have that?

 

the garmin 260W (w = wide screen) has all that and is less expensive at about $200

 

If its portable go with the Garmen Nuvi cuz i had 3 magellans and they were all garbage.... The pioneer or kenwoods in dashes are nice if you going to go that route...

 

Iam gonna go with a portable one and it looks like its going to be a garmin 260w or 265wt can some one please explain to me whats bluetooth,text to speech, lane assist, and traffic updating is. Is there a subscrption fee or anything. Thanks for the help.

 

The bluetooth is so you could connect your phone and use the nuvi as a speaker phone.... The text to speech is a new feature where when it talks it will have subscripts... i think thats made for either people who have the music blarring or people who cant here.... lane assist im not sure what that it.... But the traffic updating is useful because if u commute a lot it will tell you where there is traffic and where to avoid it... I think the first 6 months or a year are free with the nuvi.. at least thats what it was with mine.... After the free subscription expires it will prompt you if you want to keep it....

Any thoughts on the Garmin nuvi 750? Iam asking cause it on sale at Academy (sports and outdoor store) for $200 which is the same price as the nuvi 265wt.

 

Not at all over rated-It's an amazing situational awareness tool. I've navigated a 210', 179', 110', and several smaller boats primarily one GPS for more than 35,000 nautical miles....but I had several back ups and a brain. I also use GPS as a primary nav input for flying...with back ups and a skill set.

The contractor you mentioned was a fucking moron...The GPS doesn't do EVERYTHING for you....but it helps.

 

I've got a Garmin Nuvi, too. I love the thing, I don't remember the model number, but a couple weeks after I got it I saw the widescreen model of the one I had, kinda wish I had the wider one, just because I've got bigass hands for typing in addresses and such on the little/normal screen.
