So I didn't read and I didn't search and changed my oil for the first time in a hurry. Easiest oil change ever? Not when you manage to drain the entire filter onto the driveway, sorry, half- the other half is all over the A arm and skidplate. WTH is that little drip cup for when it just directs the oil immediately onto the A arm?

Seriously, what am I doing wrong because it seems like the top oil filter is much worse as it just dumps all over.

That is why you use a catch basin of some sort, they sell them for $2.99 at the parts store where you got the oil, skid plate should come off for cleanest approach to oil filter...

I then transfer the contents of said basin to a 3 gallon container which I use for draining the pan, then recycle when full...

Once you get good at it, about 30 minutes and you should be good to go...

when you take off the oil filter theres a drain hole in the catch, your supposed to but like a chopped off water bottle or any container that fits under there to catch the oil....the oil wont magically disappear and drain into the abyss

Attach a hose to the drain and run it underneath the truck. Next time you change the oil you just have to put a bucket where you routed that hose.

The 4.0l Tacoma is the easiest oil change I've ever done. I love the filter design, use a hose or water bottle to catch the oil remnants in the filter

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
i usually end up taking a 20oz bottle and wedging it under there. lost the cap for the nipple, so no need to remove that anymore.

I do this also. Just wedge a 20 oz. bottle from your favorite soda under the drain hole and you're all set.

I just put an empty quart size oil container under the drain nipple, they easily fit right in there without any modification. Crack the oil filter slowly and let it drain. Easiest and cleanest oil changes I have ever done!

Just don't do what I did last time. I forgot to take the stupid rubber nipple off the drain hole.

After making a big mess, that rubber piece is now in the garbage.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
I think a lot of us did that the first time if you didn't read the DIY first. McDonald's or any large fast food cup wedges in nicely, plus has a large enough mouth to catch it all if you can't get something right up to the drain hole.

I did that the first time as well. Sucks. Now I just hang a pop can (or soda can depending on where you live) below the little drain to catch the oil. At least you didn't drain the transmission fluid. I've heard of at least one person that did that.
