Toyota is buying back my Tacoma due to the rotted out frame. My question is, what can be taken off of the truck before turning it in? My understanding is that any "accessories" that you put on can be removed say like tonno cover, maybe nerf bars, bedliner, etc. My question is actually about the rear bumper. My bumper is in mint condition and I want to take it off and give it to my uncle who had a bumper that rotted right off of his truck. Since these trucks are just getting crushed anyway, is this a big deal or will they cause a ruckus because the bumper was removed?

ask the dealer. All will be different. We won't be able to tell you anything about that. Will vary on how personal the dealer is, how much they care or don't care. Which...we don't know.

my experience is that all OEM parts should be left on the truck, but there are always exceptions and ways around things..

I say take off the bumper and say you were rear-ended a week ago..

I chopped out by muffler the night before the buy-back and never heard a word about it.

Well in your case the truck would probably be scrapped so I would say hack away.

A far as that goes tell you uncle to come over with some buddies and some beer and swap out anything that he wants, hell if your motor is nicer with less miles swap them out too...
I wouldnt turn it in with NO bumper at all, just start swapping. Why would the dealer care since its just getting crushed!

When my 97 was bought back, they told me they did'nt care what I took off the truck. I saw bumpers removed, caps, wheels, etc., etc., I would think it depends on who is running the service dept. By the way, what year is your truck? I just had my 02 brought in and they did'nt buy it back, they replaced the whole frame, brake lines, all fluids. I wish they did buy it back, so I could buy a newer model, but I will keep this for a while. I did'nt think they were going to buy them back this time around. Well anyhow, I would take whatever you want off the truck. Good luck

I have a 1998 Tacoma and am seeing some rust on the frame. I haven't gotten underneath yet to see the extent, but, what's the process for finding out if you are eligible for the Buy Back? I would definitely love to get in a new one if I were eligible for the buy back.

    Needs whoring LOL
I just went thru this about a month ago. Whatever you are going to do do it before you take your truck in. Once it's there they will not let you drive it out of the dealership. I had just put new tires on the back of my truck and they wouldn't even let me take it down the street to have them switched out. If I had known about TW you guys could have stripped her down LOL, 2000 with only 132K miles.

I'd do what was suggested, take off what you want but replace it with the old crap. The value is established at excellent no matter the condition. GOOD LUCK.

The bogus information given by some of these dealers never ceases to amaze me. :frusty:

IT IS YOUR TRUCK! You can take it home from the dealer (or leave it there).

After the agent from I.S.G. (Impartial Services Group - Toyota's representative) calls you to make an appointment for the buyback transaction, you can take your truck to the dealer for the meeting.
The agent from ISG will verify the VIN, note the mileage and have you sign the paperwork. You receive the check at the meeting. The End.

Take it to your Toyota dealer. The VIN will tell them if the truck is still within the 15 year time period from 'date of first use'. With a '98 you may already be past it.

The truck is inspected for rust perforation. If found - the truck fails.

Short version: Your dealer will submit the info to Toyota.
Toyota will make an offer to buy it back (if within 15 years)
Value is established at KBB 'excellent' rating for installed OEM equipment regardless of truck condition. Mileage is the only variable. And certain add-ons may be calculated in, i.e- bedcaps.
Hint: No one cares how old or new your tires/wheels are, or if they are the correct size, etc. The truck has to be able to roll.

Assuming you accept their offer, which is made through ISG - Toyota's representative, (Note: You would be crazy to decline the offer) then a couple more minor paperwork transaction steps occur between you and ISG.

Eventually, you will meet up with an ISG agent at your dealer, sign the final documents, receive your check and you are done.

FWIW: Some TW members may have differing opinions based on their personal experience.
    Mine i
s based on nearly 1,500 transactions with the buyback process.

    The better coast

If the truck was driven in and the truck is not street safe, they should be able to say you can't drive it home. If it was brought in on a trailer, be that on your own or a tow truck, you should be able to do what you want with it.

Also OP, why not just swap the bumpers? so they cant say "this truck needs a bumper"
