Would using the 55w ballasts possibly melt my housing if I use them when I do my retro on my 98 tacoma?

Are you going to be doing a retrofit using projectors from the retrofit source? Or are you going to be just throwing HID's into your stock housing? You can run 55 watt safely in the fxr projector not the mini h1 or the mini d2s

Ya I was planning on using the mini d2s does it matter if I'm using a aftermarket housing not the stock one? I was planning on using some spyder black headlights with the clear lens..

The problem with the Spyders is their projector systems are not compatible with the retrofit systems.

You can get OEM-style housings for your year with clear lenses. Get a set of those and retrofit the projectors into them.
