Are you getting bad MPG?

2012 taco with 60k miles on it...avg 18 per gallon 4.0 double cab tss

19.8 combined city/highway

 

Compared to my car, 99 honda, my mpg sucks, but its a truck and compared to my bros 4runner, it gets better mpg

 

Been keeping track of mileage for the past few weeks. 19.5+ from the dealer. Made the mistake of putting 87 (and shitty off-brand at that) in it, and mileage dropped to just over 14. It also had no power.

Put 89 in it since, and am averaging just over 20 MPG now. I'm happy with that.

 

not sure how this looks, but I got 315 miles on a tank......... when I filled up, calculations said 3.5 gallons were still in the tank (gas light wasnt on).

drove in some rlly high cross winds, and up quite a few large/long grades.

2006 trd prerunner AC

265/75/16 load range C.........2" lift............trd supercharger........premium gas of course, and air conditioning on most the trip.

 

2013 dblcb sb , 3" lift mud terrain tires. Averaging 17-18 mpg on regular

 

21mpg mixed with midtravel. GET SOME

 

Calculated over 21 on a little business jaunt over to palm springs. 389 miles, 18.43 gallons. I think that I squeezed a bit more gas into the tank on the pre-trip fill versus after, but not enough to drop it that much. Prolly would have even been better, but took a short cut on the last part and got stuck in Moorpark/Somis traffic.

 

Squeezing in more fuel pre-trip vs post-trip would have been reflected in a higher calculated MPG.

But high speed is a killer. My worst tanks have been in New Mexico and Texas rolling 75-80 on the highway. 2-3mpg down from normal.

 

Sweet spot was found in mexico too.....atleast the ultrgauge showed 25 mpg at 75......20 at 65mph.

My father in law and gf both made a comment as to "at the price of gas, im surprised u drive that fast"....I slowed to 65 and let them watch the gauge.
Then I resumed 75.

This was n/a at the time......still the same effect f/I tho. I guess the truck just has its sweet spot? I have no clue. I do not calculate mpg cuz I will not adjust my right foot, will not buy a car instead, and never ran anything lower than 91 before, and cannot now anyway.

Think the ultrgauge is off?
All settings were calibrated when installed ?

 

Not sure on ultragauge but if it's like the scangauge try resetting and drive for say 50 miles at 75 and then reset and run 65 for 50. I will bet you will see better mpg at 65. A short instantaneous doesn't mean much, even a slight incline or decline makes a big difference.

No truck gets better mpg at 75 vs 65 in the long run.

 

That makes no sense. These trucks are a brick in the wind and will get their best mileage between 55 and 65. Anything above 65, mileage drops exponentially.

 

I'm going to preface this post with I drive like a grandpaw. I very rarely get above 45-50 mph because of where I drive.

With that said....

Every since I switched to Shell V-Power 93 octane my mileage has increased. I was averaging around 21 MPG and my last 3 tanks have been just a touch over 24 MPG all hand calculated. I'll take a picture of the next fill up. I fill each tank up to the neck (I know... not recommended but at least I know it is accurate each time). I have posted a link to a test that "Fifth Gear" did on different octane fuel in different posts so I won't post it again but it was a pretty big difference.
The worst mileage that I have had out of my truck was in South Dakota with the Mid Grade Ethanol fuel. I barely got over 15 MPG (a strong head wind needs to be accounted also but it was still terrible). The best is just a little over 25 MPG with a strong tail wind and pacing a semi from Albuquerque NM. to Amarillo TX. so that can't be counted.

I guess the moral of my story is drive with a light foot, and for me Shell V-Power 93 is the best fuel out there. JMO.

*Edit* I also have a K&N filter though I doubt that makes much difference at all.

 

hahahaha............... Ill do a couple tanks with a longer "avg", but that will NOT show the mpg at sustained speed (just for you guys).... those readings were on flat areas, Id never post silly crap from up or downhill.

I believe all vehicles have a sweet spot, and it is not 65 for my truck.

normal driving (for me) as posted above........i drive very hard, and use the supercharger. this tank included something I cannot talk about on TW also.

how do those numbers look?
Like I said, I dont calculate MPG cuz I dont care, but I do believe the sweet spot for MY truck is NOT 65, but 70-75. YMMV (literally).

gimme another idea for testing real world mpg (NOT average)....I dont care what my average is for this conversation really....I just want a good way to support the theory of (65 is better or 70 is better for MY truck only).

same stretch of road back to back with something else that uses instant MPG available besides ultra or scan gauge?

I can do the run at 2 or 4 am.......Im up then anyhow, that way it will be accurate as far as other vehicles being "wind breaks", and I never try to "draft"...thats just not safe for anyone around.

I gots big tars, low geers, and I drive real fast down them public roads. the fuzz keep on pullin me ovr fer no reasin. im gettn bout 7 mpg maybe I need new headlites

I love this truck but was hoping fuel mileage would be better.

 

I get 16 all around, I drive 10mph over everywhere and accelerate as needed, no hypermiling. My wife grts 18.5 in her highlander all around. I don't cry about it. My neighbors daughter tells me she is getting 14 in her new jeep.

 

I was getting 14, I switched to Shell and it jumped to 19. That's if I go REAL SLOW.

 

Check my mpg's today 13.7 almost 14!........ I don't drive like a grandpa, but I'm not hard on it either. Lots of stop and go to work for 11 miles a day and some drives to my parents house about 30 miles round trip. ( steep hilly roads ) wish it would get better but I don't care it's a truck and 10 ply 285,70,17's are heavy compared to stock.
