And this is why NASA needs better PR. They have all these amazing resources for knowledge but not enough people know about it. The public's ignorance is one reason why NASA's budget is such easy political fodder. /rant

I went to Natural Bridge Falls in MT this weekend and since it was low water I took some time to explore the river bed (during the spring melt the water level rises and covers this area)
    Low water:
    nbf3_b299470845355e3db551c3ae14288eef6d391f06.jpg
    High water:
    naturalbridgefalls_5ea0bd1e2d100c9ff211adb3aed9b8ce83e5b664.jpg
This area used to be part of the inland sea and there are still some signs of the previous inhabitants embedded in the limestone.

And I found this too...any ideas? Several areas I could see formations that were little tubes of quartz (?) or something that looked like quartz, about 1/8" in diameter. Some areas were random and another looked like the tubes were arranged in a radial pattern.

The earthquakes in Oklahoma last week scared me out of hiding here at TW. It just took me this long to get the power back on.

OR I was in Houston. And I'm lazy.

    Whichever.

So many different formations and colors - fascinating.
When I first got there it was cloudy and then while I was out walking around the sun came out and the whole ground started to sparkle

How was your geology adventure this weekend?

Might be up that way in the fall. Lisa do you have any tips on what to make sure and see, or what's not worth it? I'll probably have the kids in tow, they have good endurance but their short legs are still a factor.

I'm sure Keith can chime in too...
the area is very hilly, I don't know why but I was expecting it to be flatter. There are some steep hills to climb on a couple of the trails. Bring good, sturdy shoes as the lava is very uneven and sharp. Sandals would be a no-no. And there isn't much shade or protection from the wind

I hiked the north crater trail (very steep, dirt path), devil's orchard (flat, sidewalk), tree molds (less steep, dirt path, pretty easy) and broken top trails (less steep) - that's about 7 miles in two days. I didn't have time to see the caves. All very intersting, I spent a lot of time just inspecting the different formations.

The campground was nice, very clean....but no campfires! And the park is a LONG way from the nearest city so gas up before you get too far from the interstate

I need to quit being lazy and post pics from our hike up Tent Rocks. Maybe contribute something useful to the thread.
