TRD OR or Sport

I've been looking to buy an 09 Tacoma, but don't know if I want the OR or Sport. I would like the Double Cab Long bed, but I also understand that the OR doesn't come in LB DC, which sucks.

I plan to do some off roading, nothing intense, just some trails here and there. Will the Sport be able to handle those with the LSD and 4x4, without the locker, with ease? Will the suspension be able to handle 'some' wear and tear, nothing too harsh?

I need the LB DC, so I guess I have to get the Sport. But I just wanted to know how well the Sport would handle 'some' off roading.

Lockers are for real tough situations like some serious mud bogging and rock climbing? It seems like you went through that mud without any problem, and I'm guessing without a locker?

I have seen plenty of pics on here of the sports being run pretty hard off road. Go with the sport since it has the longbed you want too.

I have a LB Sport and love it... I was driving around in real loose sand the other day and didnt even need to use the 4 wheel low, you can always add a rear locker later if you need to

 

does your truck have the auto lsd or a actual lsd since it is a 09 ?

 

The front springs on the Off Road models are progressive. Shocks, leafs and sway bars are the same.

 

Sport here with no problems getting traction, thats for sure.

 

I'm not sure of the reasoning behind the progressive and standard rate springs, but the progressive ones are shaped a bit like a cone. Smaller at the bottom and larger at the top. The actual metal is the same diameter, but the wind is what changes.

The original poster - desibeatz- should start a thread asking about those with 09's TRD Sports and the offroad capabilities.

Because, everything prior to 09 will have the mechanical LSD. They're totally different.

Do the Auto LSD and Mechanical LSD work the same when in the same offroad situations? That's the question....(I have no frigin idea myself)

 

sorry for adding a stupid question to this thread but what exactly is the difference between the 09 TRD Sport and the TRD Offroad. When I just went to the dealership and ordered my TRD sport package, I had no idea there was an offroad package. Can anyone advise what the difference is?

2009 OR has the rear locker, and the bilsteins are tuned slightly differently (same shocks though). You also get the skid plate with the front tow hook. Other than that, the differences are minor.

In Canada the double cab upgrade is the TRD Sport (with or without leather) and the access cab upgrade is the TRD Offroad.

Well that's good to know that OR travel is no problem with the Sport package. I was worried that the suspension would bottom out on even the littlest OR terrain.

Now I'm thinking about taking it to Pismo Beach or Sand Mountain in Nevada to test out the LSD!!

I'm 20 and getting my first actual truck, instead of having to use other peoples truck. Thank you all for helping me!!
