Are those any good?

 

The freeze dried ice cream is pretty bomb.

 

Was thinking about doing those instead of pre-cooking stuff at home.

 

I have used those while backpacking for years. I really like them. Kinda pricey, but not bad when you want to have hot food that you don't have to worry about spoiling over the course of several days. I hadn't even thought of those on this trip, I was trying to figure out how to keep a cooler cold, or use the mini fridge in the hotel room to store 4 days worth of food.

 

The MountainHouse stuff is actually really good for that type of food. And MUCH easier to prepare especially for you guys travelling far distances.

If you don't have a stove or jetboil, and are cooking on a fire I'll share a little backpacking trick for boiling water.

1)Get a 24oz Rockstar like this. Important that it has this type of lid.


2)Drink or empty the rockstar can.

3) Remove the little plastic liner on the inside of the cap.

4)Fill can with water and put the cap back on.

5) place can in campfire.

The water boils pretty quickly in the aluminum can with the cap on. This is a slick backpacking trick since an empty rockstar can weighs nothing and is easy to pack.

 

I like that stuff for hikes and what not but nothing beats grilling at camp

 

Does it have some sort of pressure release? Will it eventually blow up if forgotten in the fire?

 

A lot of those are actually pretty good! Usually takes a few of those meals when out horseback riding, easy to pack and good to eat.

 

You don't need to put the cap on tight. When you remove the plastic seal on the inside of the cap it won't seal very tight so it can release some pressure. Also you don't want the plastic seal to melt into your water.

 

oh, didn't know there was a 7 am group as well.

If you wanna do it Thursday go at like 7:30 so you only pass one group?

There is a full grocery store 15 minutes away from bfe. Why would you subject yourself to that for a week.

 

Honestly ive run into bigger groups in moab some times it's fun to just watch them till there is a big enough area to jump around them did that on poison spider, then my buddy rolled his truck and we had it back on it wheels befor they even cought up then off we went..

 

Dude, it would save us all a big hassle if your small group just ran it a different day.. Friday seems like a good alternative... I just don't want any problems with our gathering allowing too many trucks on one trail, could get fined. just not worth it.

 

Haven't tried them yet.

I am already keeping two coolers of booze and water as cold as possible so I wanted to make eating easy. It is not too bad most of them were about $5-$7 and wont go bad for 7 years.

Thats good to hear. I should probably try one before I leave.

 

Just trying to keep it easy. I might go get some other stuff when I get there, but I figure at least I know I will have food no matter what. Plus if we stop for lunch on a trail I can whip something up quick.


Lastly, I can make coffee with it.

 

I've tried quite a bit of the freeze dried backpacking meals and the Mountain House ones are by far the tastiest out of all the companies that make them. The Mountain House ones that I particularly like are the chili mac with beef, lasagna with meat sauce, chicken breast with potato's, beef stroganoff with noddles, spaghetti with meat sauce, mac and cheese, granola with milk and blue berries, and the skillet breakfast. Tried a bunch of their other meals but didn't care for them.

Just an FYI about the lasagna with meat sauce...it is VERY cheesy and the cheese sticks to your spoon so make sure you use a disposable spoon to eat it with.

oh ya, forgot there was a concern last year for getting fined due to group size

your bowels will hate you

 

Also, if our event crosses a line with BLM in any way, it will seriously hinder future events should it continue and ever become bigger. Best not to be on their bad side.

 

Wait, you are saying you like these better than MRE's? Psh.....
