Looking for my first tacoma and currently looking at a 2010 with only 8000 miles on it! I have test driven all models. Shouldn't have nailed the pedal on the v6 after testing a four banger! Sealed the deal with my right foot. Anyone get the v6 AC without all the buttons and whistles? (Radio and shocks I can swap with my eyes closed.). Just need to know if the Sr5 or TRD is really needed...

It really all depends on how you intend to use the truck. I have the double cab version. 2010 4x4 DCSB V6 automatic. Zero options. To me, the most attractive thing in the SR5 packages is the pre-installed 6500 lb. towing package. For the way I use the truck, everything else is unnecessary.

Do you offroad? Do you need an e locker? Do you need a factory installed bedside decal? I really like the options on the SR5 and if I were to purchase again I would go with the SR5 again.

Doesn't the locker come standard? If I were to get the TRD model, the razor blade would make the first mod. Cutting the "T" off from TURD is top priority. To pay over four grand more than stock for a sticker that means crap???

    E-locker is TRD Offroad only

Seats are one of the biggest differences.

SR5 doesn't automatically come with the Tow Package. It's an additional option to the SR5 or TRD packages.

I'm probably guilty of over-generalizing. Toyota offers different option packages in different regions of the country, and they vary from year to year. I can't say how the various option packages were constructed in 2010, but for the 2013 models (at least in New Hampshire) all SR5 V6 trucks come with the tow package. Here, the Convenience Package is one level above the base trim and one level below the SR5, and includes the V6 tow package, remote keyless entry, etc. I think that the expense of the full 6500 lb. tow package (if you can get the dealer to install it at all) warrants a trim-level upgrade if you need the towing capacity.

The SR5 also comes with a larger alternator, battery, and a oil cooler if you have to tow package. Not sure if the 2010 comes with these things?

Digging up this thread instead of starting a new one. I'm in the same boat. I plan to do an aftermarket lift and wheels/tires so the TRD package doesn't mean anything to me but more money for parts that I will take off. I was thinking about getting a base model DCSB 4x4, but the only option that I want is the towing package. But you can't get it without the higher up package.

The towing package adds a bigger battery, alternator, oil cooler, trailer harness and hitch right? Is there any difference in the truck besides that? Different shifter with tow/haul or different computer in the truck? Is the oil cooler built into the radiator? So if I was to buy a base truck and put the towing package on myself, I would just need to swap radiator, bigger battery and alternator then bolt on the hitch?

To have the same equipment as the factory V6 tow package, you need an oil cooler, transmission cooler, higher capacity alternator and battery, trailer hitch, and the 7-pin trailer wiring harness. I think that's all of it.

The base radiator contains a circuit for automatic transmission fluid. It warms the trans fluid after startup, and cools it under heavy load. The tow package adds an external ATF cooler.

Depending on where your dealer is located, some of this may already be on the base truck. Mine came with the upgraded alternator and battery, and the dealer told me that all V6/automatic trucks in the New England market are equipped this way.
