Owners manual says anywhere between low level indicator and full level indicator(a difference of approx. 1.6 qt.) is ok.
OEM filter doesn't say anything about quantity on it.

Sorry.... Assuming that you put a OEM filter on it the 5.5 is what the owners manual calls for. Some filters are smaller than OEM therefore it wouldn't take quite as much oil.

It's your truck brother. You put as much or as little oil in it as you want. Makes no difference to me. I'm just going to put in as much as it calls for. Simple as that ;)

    Cheers

Can you show me where it says you must put 5.5 in it? I'm well aware of where it says the maximum capacity is 5.5...

Honestly, I don't even look at mine on a change. I just put in 5.5 and call it good.

Seriously??? We're still talking about this? It seems to me that you just want to argue a trivial point. I'm not falling into that trap. The last time I changed my oil and filter I put 5.5 in it and that is what the owners manual called for. When I checked my oil on the dip stick it was dead on the full mark. That leads me to believe that 5.5 is correct.

I'm done. You can keep on if you like but I'm out.

    Cheers once again :)

You are 1/2 cup over. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure there is some margin for error.

I'm glad I read this thread because I've been using 4.8 quarts for the past 50,000 miles with no problems. The 2007 owner's manual doesn't have a chart like this. I found this on Toyota's website here. Notice that it does say 4.8 quarts for the V6 1GR-FE engine, unless it's a Prerunner or 4WD model.

Why would those models require an additional 0.7 quarts of oil? I don't get it.

I don't know. The first time I changed my oil I noticed that exact same thing in the owners manual and I have no idea why mine takes more oil but it does for some reason. Must have something to do with the oil pan on the 4x4 and PreRunner. My PreRunner is just a 2 wheel drive with a 4x4 suspension so that's the only thing I can think of

^V6 2WD non-Prerunner means X-Runner, i.e. low ride height. Oil pan may be flatter for clearance reasons.

And the manual says dipstick takes precedence over the reference oil capacity. ;)

4 oz isn't a problem. I generally have a shop change mine for me (yeah, I know...flame suit on), and it's usually about an eighth of an inch over when I get it back. No problems yet. There is some room for error. Toyota didn't build this engine so sensitive that the average lube tech would destroy it.

^This. In fact, the engine can about 96k with no oil changes at all. :D

My father in law has a work crap GMC Safari that hasn't had an oil change in the last 4 years. He's prob put 40k on it in that time...he knows its going to the junk yard when it's done and doesn't care about it, so he doesn't want to put money into it...even if it is $20. It still runs fine and gets the job done...

Point is, we over obsess about our oil...even a crap 99 GMC Safari can handle some oil abuse...a little overfill isn't the end of the world...as long as it isn't too bad...

That's kind of like saying "I know the owners manual calls for 6 spark plugs for my truck but I think 5 will be fine".

I don't think it's kind of like that at all ;).

The jug of oil I buy has 5 quarts in it. I'm not going to buy another quart just to put half a quart in because it won't hurt anything. Besides, there is some residual oil still in the motor after you drain it anyway.

Your truck my friend. Or... you could look at it like this, "the next time I change my oil I still have the 1/2 Qt from the last time I changed it".

It's cool either way. If you're happy with doing it that way that's all that matters. ;)
