Driveline Clunk When Stopping/Starting

Hello All,

This is my second post here, been lurking for a while, now have a question. Purchased a 2006 Tacoma DCSB TRD OffRoad 4wd 115,000 miles.....I did a bit of research so knew about the different potential problems, well mine has the driveline clunk when coming to a stop and then starting again, I found a TSB which seems to relate to this issue, but have no idea if there is any potential help/remedy from Toyota for this problem. Any thoughts/help would be appreciated. Oh yeah, LOVE the truck

Not sure what your specific issue is but sometimes the driveshaft splines get dry and will pop when the stored up energy releases. You will need to remove the shaft, clean and re-grease the splines. This will temporarily relieve the problem until the joint dry's out again.

On the other hand, could be universals I guess.

 

Try retorquing the rear u-bolts to 80 ft lbs too.

 

X2^^^ Had this issue after installing Dakars, had to go back after a day or two and re-torque.

 

My 06 Pre-runner ( 3 leaf rear ) had the same issue. Axle wrap when coming to a stop and once you released the brakes the rear snaps back causing the clunk. I learned to ease off the brakes and unload the rear end before complete stop and take off. Hope I'm not confusing you lol. It was aggravating.

 

Driving me crazy, can't find out what it is. I've re-torqued the leaf spring u-bolts, wheels, unloaded everything from the storage compartments under the seats & in the bed, and everything in the bed. STILL Clunks. Sounds like something in the rear end. I'll lube the drive shaft splines & try that. Pisses me off; 65,000 miles & can't find a noise. I love my Taco.

 

Could be a u-joint on the driveline too. I have found the clunking happening with a worn out u-joint.

 

My opinion is a U joint or joints are bad and needs to be replaced.

 

Make sure it’s not the gas in the tank sloshing back and forth. It’ll sound an feel like somebody bumped you in the rear end.

 

Adjust the rear brakes. if they don't grab enough the driveline stays loaded up and under tension.

I just checked all the brakes about a week ago (goin to Colorado in Sept.). I have 2/3 pad & shoe thickness left after 65,000 miles (love it). The rears are properly adjusted. I lubed the u-joints yesterday, didn't help. I have a double cab so it has a carrier bearing in the shaft. It has some play, but went to dealer & crawled under a new one on showroom floor, didn't seem a whole lot different. Mine has a sealed boot over the spline after the carrier bearing & I'd rather not mess with it except as a last resort. The dealer said if they mess with it, I'd pay labor time from the time the mechanic clocks in on it, cause I'm past the 36,000 regular warranty. I guess I'll crawl under & look for tranny mounting problems, etc. Thanks to everyone for the ideas.

 

I have a 2010 double cab and have the same friggin problem. It almost seems like a quirk Toyota has because if I ease in and ease out it seems to be less notable. I checked everything as well. Wish I had a definite fix...aggregating. But love my truck!!

 

Having same issue on my 05'... anybody find a fix on this yet?

 

There are a ton of posts on this so do a real search and spend some time reading thru the endlessness.
Run your VIN and see all the TSBs or call and the dealer to see if anything open on yours.

A few quick points:
1. That seat of the pants bump or clunk to some at a stop is usually the AC kicking on as the idle solenoid steps up.
2. Toyota did a trans software flash on most models
3. The rear springs are too soft and can wrap and change the driveline angle (if altered dealer always blames that).
4. Toyota has had endless complaints on the 2 piece with center carrier since 2005 and has replaced many.
5. Trans mount can be bad.
6. Possible rear diff is going bad.
7. Etc

 

Had this issue on my 2012 and lubing the splines fixed it. Used this stuff as lube.

First time I did it, it lasted about a year before the clunk came back, so I did it again it it hasn’t come back again, but probably a good idea to do this every year. When you remove the clamps on the rubber boot, I just removed the front one that way I didn’t break both clamps. They’re oetiker clamps and can’t really be reused.
