Whenever I'm in public and I see any serviceman or anyone dressed in fatigues I always tend to shake there hand and thank them... Even cops and firefighters, I always just feel like its the least they deserve... They should be just as famous and popular as Nicholas cage or Kobe Byrant.

I don't know, a friend of mine gave me a weird look a couple weeks back when I turned around in an elevator and shook an air force mans hand and told him thank you for your service... Is that weird? Would you be weirded out if you were in the serviceman's shoes?

Just seems to be one of those things I can't seem to break myself of, Like saying Sir or Ma'am. I do that shit constantly to just about everyone and people give me dirty looks sometimes! Like... When did respect become disrespectful?!

You're not weird.... but I'm not a serviceman, and it might be a bit weird for them.
I entirely agree with the fact about how they deserve more than celebrities.. outrageous you ask me.

I figure why not?! Respect is a big thing for me. Plus it makes me feel good I'm at least making an effort to show support rather then buying some stupid bumper sticker.

I've only been in for 11 months, but people will shake my hand when they see me. I don't think it's weird, except that I don't feel that I've earned the right to be thanked for my service yet. But it is nice for people to do that in my opinion.

Dying for your country and breaking a leg for your state basketball team is a pretty big risk gap, but also provides a big salary gap in the wrong direction. I'm not saying we rip off our countrymen but we definitely don't treat that near like we should, especially veterans.

Lets not start that argument though for moderators sake :)

Hand outs my ass. You may wish to rephrase that. The benifits are good, depending on where one is stationed. If there wasn't a housing allowance then being in the Military wouldn't be any better than working at any other high skill low paying job.

A simple hand shake is a very nice gesture. Thank you for your support.

Yah I think anything given to the armed forces is the opposite of a handout, they earned it better then many of the common citizens will for their weekly checks in this country.

I will fully stand behind our troops. Our freedoms are rights that are EARNED not owned. If you don't stand for the ones who fight for our rights then you don't stand for the right fight.

Handouts? Why because she choose to stock her refrigerators? Or a movie night?

    Movies really fucking movies?

Yeah tell that to the people that are barely making it in the military. Or better yet the people that deploy constantly or the guys that I see almost daily without their legs or even their fucking dicks. How about when spouses have to organize funerals or deal with helping their loved one work through the mental shit like ptsd because they watched their best friend get blown up.

    Yeah, fucking handouts.

Lets all try our best not to disrespect anyone and lets keep this thread open and free of moderator oversight.

I think we have two different definitions of handouts being used here. The wife of the serviceman isnt getting handouts (Free because she needs them) shes getting Help outs. Free because she needs them and DESERVES them.

Theres a big difference between handing out and helping out. A homeless man gets handouts, A servicemans wife gets Help outs.

Seeing as we have a crap load of military bases here in Colorado...it's not weird. People used to always come up to my dad and thank him while I was growing up. They did it to my mom too.

I wouldn't call them handouts but the military does do a lot to boost moral. It's just some of the perks that come with the job. Since I grew up an Air Force brat, I always remember going to free movie nights, or have some concert tickets donated to the base, or a nice function/dinner someone would put on as a thank you. No different than any other job really.
