Too many miles to buy?

Hey guys I am in the market for a used first gen tacoma 4x4. I have been searching for a while but there haven't been too many good ones for sale lately. Yesterday I came across a 99 ext cab V6 manual with 216k miles for $6500. The guy bought it from the original owner to get his business going and now that it is up and running he doesnt need the truck. It looks to be in really good shape for how many miles it has. The only thing I am really worried about is how high the mileage is. It seems like here in Texas most tacomas for sale have really high mileage. I'll post some pictures of the truck and you guys tell me what you think.

I took care of my last taco and traded it in with 209,000 miles on it. It was running perfect and I never had one issue with it. It all depends on how it was taken care of. I wouldn't have given a minutes thought on mine to drive it to California and back right then. YMMV.

Here's another one I am looking at its a 97 3rz with 229k miles for $5500 but the owner says the motor and clutch assembly was replaced at 185k miles. The new motor has 104k miles on it. The owner says he has owned the truck since June 2006.

Ya I have seen quite a few high mileage tacomas around. The guy who is selling it has only owned it for 6 months so he doesn't know much about the service history of the truck. He bought the truck from the original owner. I'll admit it's one of the best looking tacomas with 200k+ miles for sale in a long time.

Around $26,000 worth of unleaded in the fuel tank.
The first one looks better by far. 216k miles isn't really that bad.

Why would the second one need a new motor so soon? It means it wasn't well cared for.

I'm really hoping the first one looks as good as it does in the pictures. Hopefully he still has the original owners contact info so I can ask him about the service history

If the truck is as clean and well-cared for as it looks in the pics, I'd have no problem paying $6000 for the white truck. I'd stay away from the red one. For even $1000 less, it's seen a much tougher life.

    So you're my competition hey...

And no, there aren't many great deals for a 4x4 v6 Tacoma in town. Hope you find one soon. Take me for a test drive when you get it? I'm a step or two behind you :)

Haha yup I am. You are right there are no good deals at all here for tacomas or 4runners. All the good deals seem to be on the west coast. What part of Houston are you?

Here is another one that I have been eyeing but it's been for sale for a while. It's a 2002 ext cab 3rz 4x4. Here is the sale ad

You won't find another one out there like this one. This truck has 4 wheel drive, 3" lift, 2.7 liter 4 cylinder engine, 228k highway miles, NON-Smoker. This truck was used to get me to and from work for the last 8 years. It has a 5 speed manual transmission, black Toyota aftermarket rims, aftermarket ARB Deluxe Bumper fixed up with dual 9" KC super rally lights, Michelin tires, 80% life remaining, K&N air filter, camper shell carpeted on ceiling with bright cargo light, bedliner, tow package, Alpine speakers in back, Infinity speakers in front, Alpine deck with remote, MP3/WMA compatible, 600w amp, 2 8" JBL subs, custom box, rubber and carpet floor mats, toolbox plus an extra Michelin tire with half life left, AC is very cold and the engine runs and drives great. This truck is truly tough and will be on the road for a long time. It is fun to get around town in, and can take you where you need to go off road. Never wore anything out by serious off roading or mudding. Only used for slow creeping around ranch roads and as a commuter. This was always my baby and never wanted to mistreat it. Changed the oil myself every 3,000 miles, until Toyota told me they recommend every 5,000, so now I do 5,000 miles. If you've never driven one, you will be impressed. These trucks handle like a sports car, light and nimble, and have all the quality and reliability that comes with Toyota, these trucks were built to last.

It has high miles but the owner said its most highway. He is asking 10400 which I think is high.

^10,400, is way too expensive for that truck. Granted even if it has been maintained and looks well, you have to price vehicles to accurately to represent the mileage. That truck right there is better price around $7.5 -$8K. Definately not anywhere near $10k.

I agree! 10K is way too high! Also make sure you are checking below for any frame rust. Rust would be a big deal breaker when you're out shopping for a used taco.

I just purchased a 2002 Taco extracab 4x4 TRD yesterday for $7900 with $209k. In California, most tacos have high mileage as well. I'll post up pictures soon.
